For existing traditional IRA, whether or not to convert depends on:
1. Is your tax rate higher now or after you retire? If now it is higher, do
not convert. Otherwise, convert! Here I assume that your traditional IRA is
pre-tax money, if it is non-deductible IRA (or after-tax money), you always
should convert!

not considered. I do have rollover IRA myself which prevent me from doing
tax free conversion. But I can do this for my wife who only has 401k account
. So here are what I gathered so far:
1) If you are married, you must file your tax return together
2) If you have any IRA account, all balance must be considered when the

If you make $5000 this year and if you make $0 next year, the $5000 you put
into Trad. IRA this year will be taxed next year because you converted it
into Roth IRA.

司的match,剩下的2万是这8万赚得利润(25%回报)。那么我辞职之后,如果想把401K
转成ROTH IRA,是不是我自己的6万本金不用再缴一次税,通过这6万本金赚的钱(6万*
25%=1.5万)也不用缴税,因为是从ROTH 401K去ROTH IRA;但是公司的match部分(2万)
,以及这2万的回报(2万*25%=5千),转成ROTH IRA的时候都要缴一下税?也就是说,
公司的match部分是被视为pre-tax 401K的?
另外,我可以只把我自己的contribution以及contribution的earning部分转成ROTH
IRA,但是把公司的match和match的earning部分转去traditional IRA么?

yeah, I didn't know this until a few days ago.
I converted 20K(deductible) +5K (non-deductible) to Roth last year, still
have 50K(deductible) in my rollover IRA.
so I only can claim 1.67K basis for the 5K, and still have 3.33K basis in
the rollover IRA.
so if I don't convert more to Roth in 2012 and after 2012 I can't convert
anymore due to income restriction, the 3.33K basis will stay in my IRA until
I start withdrawal in 20-30 years? And at that time, the basis is still 3.

you don't withdraw any earnings on your investments (as opposed to the

Suppose I have both 401k (before-tax money, say 10k) and non-deductible IRA
(after-tax money, say 10k).
1) If I only convert my non-deductible IRA to ROTH IRA, I will be taxed for
50% of conversion (i.e. 5k) because IRS deems my IRA accounts as a whole and
just uses %. Consequence is I am double-taxed for 5k.
2) If I convert both my 401k and non-deductible IRA to ROTH, then I will be
taxed at 50% of 20k, i.e. 10k. I am not double taxed in this case.

Also, you are never "double-taxed". Even in the example where you have 10k
deductible traditional IRA and 10k nondeductible traditional IRA, and you
convert 10k, you are converting 5k deductible and 5k nondeductible. So the
tax you paid for the 5k is for 5k of the deductible part, which was never
taxed. What you have left in your traditional IRA is 5k deductible and 5k

versa. But neither traditional nor Roth IRA is right -- both traditional

401K.
我每年可以投2万after-tax 401K (我同时投17K进入pre-tax 401K, 明年投17.5K), 雇
主也允许in service withdraw/rollover my after-tax 401K contribution. My
401K custodian, Fidelity, allows me to rollover the after-tax contribution
to my roth IRA account (also at Fidelity). They also acknowledge that IRA's
rule is unclear in this area.

return rate is higher than the mortgage interest, but that's not true for

按照boglehead的以下说法:选择rothIRA 还是traditional IRA 就是看你现在的收入
和将来的收入那个高。

comparison of marginal tax rates. If your marginal tax rate now is higher
than your estimated marginal tax rate at retirement, then the traditional
account is better; if it is lower, then the Roth account is better.”
那么如果说觉得自己未来海归的可能行很大,是否说选择traditional比较好??如果
你在回国不久或者等到60岁的时侯取出,不是美国公民,不需要报税,在美国的收入为
零。不知道我的理解对吗?

等同你已经交了税。 gain在你老的时候取出来时是免税的。
roth ira 今年只能放5500, 必须有W2收入的, 才能set up roth ira account, 而
且对收入有限制, 具体amount你自己查吧。。
roth ira 属于退休账户, 有些MF的minimum 投资额对退休账户很少,500 or 1000,
但对于一般的cash account 就很高, 10K or 100K,等等 |
