刚好我们领域的很多好文章也都发在IEEE杂志上，我便突发奇想，冒昧的去采访了麻老
师。这个称号据说是只颁给工程师们who demonstrated outstanding proficiency and
achieved distinction in their profession. 对于一个来美才19年的同胞（我都来
了14年了，找地缝），非常不简单。
高老师: 请问麻老师，这是你第一年申请这个Fellow吗？申请的程序大致如何？好像要
推荐信的，能说下你都找了谁写吗？
麻老师：不是，去年申请过。确切的说，是nomination，由你的nominator在每年的2月
底之前online提交nomination package。当然绝大多数情况下是你自己和熟悉的同事、
朋友商量好，由他/她做你的nominator，然后他/她帮你联系推荐人，当然一般情况下
推荐人也是你自己需要提前和别人沟通。有些nominator会让你圈一些名字，他/她直接

话说Fellow的比例。。。俺恰好做过这方面的调查。。。最近几年，以每年Fellow当选
人数和会员总数相比：
ACM 10万会员, 每年选50名Fellow。
IEEE 40万会员，每年选300个Fellow。
ASME 13万会员，每年选120名Fellow。
APS 5万会员，每年选250-300左右的Fellow。
you do the math。。。ACM，IEEE和ASME 的Fellow手册都写了不超过千分之1。实际执
行中ACM最难，万分之5。APS Fellow 比那几个貌似容易半个到1个数量级，千分之五到
百分之一。当然还是很难的。
APS Fellow得炸药奖的就很多，ACM/IEEE/ASME Fellow得炸药奖的寥寥，毕竟APS是干
基础的活，人影响力大。IEEE和ASME的，干好几个大工程项目也可以当选。

界的，只要在项目开发上表现出突出贡献，就有资格评选为fellow。还有一种是针对对
教育有突出贡献的人评fellow。部分高校里的fellow就是这种。比如东南大学的何振亚
当年评fellow就是因为神经网络方面的教育贡献（后来的life fellow是另一马事） |

发帖数: 7030 | 11 因为很难预计这些junior fellow几年之后干什么。。按照现在farm的风格 这些junior
fellow基本就是给你笔钱让你自己摸索就完了 将来找工作的时候没有强有力的老板推
荐 也没有太好的paper（janelia单纯看产出并不怎么样）有什么学术机构会感兴趣呢？
fellow其实也有一样的问题。5年term期间当然是很cool了 之后要么升成group leader
，要么走人，可是fellow做完之后再从AP开始做就很郁闷了 尤其考虑到很多fellow之
前已经做过postdoc；反过来直接给tenure的话，这些fellow又没有任何申请funding和
teaching的经验，他们在janelia有的几乎无限制的资源和支持别处又不太可能有。这
样感觉fellow似乎唯一有价值的出路就是升group leader然后呆下去 这个并不是很吸
引人。。
当然了，这些说的都是一般情况，说的是需要操心工作和前途的人。超级牛人天才什么
的我觉得janelia是个好地方 带着想法和技术去就好了 |

）都是他导师为第一作者的文章。这也能拼上IEEE fellow？是不是评IEEE fellow只需
要有3个fellow提名就可以了？
PS：我没有贬低其他评上fellow的人。绝大多数都是非常优秀的。我几个合作者这次拼
上了fellow，都是非常优秀
的，单篇引用上千的文章不少。 |

senior fellow。或者：engineer -> senior engineer ->manager ->senior manager
->director->vp
fellow待遇相当于senior manager或者director，达不到vp。算是最高技术职称，不走
管理的话，大多数人就是止步于principal engineer,到fellow的很少。我公司研发部
门以前最多有70余人，fellow三个，后来给layoff两个，调走一个。目前一个fellow都
没有了。
好像没有合适的中文翻译，也许研究员会比较接近。 |

ACM Fellow和其领域不是很一样，虽然有些交集
总的来说，IEEE涵盖的领域比ACM要大很多，人数多也是正常的
而且IEEE Fellow从1914年开始评的，ACM Fellow从1994年开始评的，总人数也更没什
么好比的了
当然，IEEE Fellow现在是越来越水了，但80，90年代评上Fellow还是件很牛的事情 |

ACS fellow > APS/MRS fellow > IEEE fellow
因为ACS fellow基本上都是很牛的人，可能和刚开始选有关；
APS/MRS有些很牛的，但也有混上年资到了就有的，毕业十年内能混上的还是很厉害的。

纪一般更大。这个现象就如同申请physics的faculty比ME的竞争更激烈，需要更多的
postdoc训练。ASME的fellow比例更小是因为工业界的会员很多，他们绝大部分是充当
分母的（比如很多本科学位的member极少有机会当上fellow)。同理IEEE的fellow比例
低，但大家感觉比APS的容易。 |

fellow同事，问之今天有何贵干，得今天要在本医院和大学附属医院的联合 grand
rounds 上 present。
虽说他已经见过大风大浪，这哥们儿在top １０的医学院毕业，然后来到我们这个儿童
医院从住院做起，一直到现在fellow二年级，不说是巨牛吧，也可称小有成绩。对于他
的临床 不是那么了解，比较让我佩服的是 handle mouse 的能力，那手法 娴熟的，要

offer，这些人在别处可是top10学校的AP offer的 所以。。
当然这个可能只对学生物的有效，janelia对数理工程背景的还是高看一眼
另外 它们招fellow不觉得文章起多大作用 很多fellow并没有太好的pub 但是基本都有
janelia需要的技术 电生理 behavior 显微镜 engineering, etc
还有 这个junior fellow我觉得很诡异 |

发帖数: 4699 | 31 有人谈到IEEE fellow 如何厉害，相当于美国院士级别。我觉得完全不能等同。
IEEE 作为学术机构，里面牛人很多，有水平的人很多。自然在fellow里面也有相当的
牛人。只不过最近十年，IEEE越来越有点迎合商业化的味道，也形成了很多小圈子和学
霸垄断领域。在这些圈子和领域，只要你认识人有推荐，混个senior member 那是绝对
轻而易举的。
最近几年comupter service 风起云涌，搞了很多新的圈子像computing service,
clouding service, grid computing, 等等，你去查查还有很多诸如相关的圈子。搞来
搞去就是那几个人当chair,组织会议等。因为这些新兴领域和小圈子的原因，那些
chair就有些当了fellow了。说到学术贡献，他们真的不是什么大牛，概以互相哄抬轿
子，以便大家轮庄。
所以说IEEE 最近几年的fellow, 靠人脉和鼓吹新领域的半瓶子醋也蛮多的。 |

十年都是senior member，直到2004年，在他的几个学生的怂恿下，才答应参与评选
fellow.再比如这位：http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=UpZbV44AAAAJ&hl=en，引用都上万了，还只是senior member。其贡献早比N多fellow强多了。还有Erric Oja的一个学生Aapo Hyvarinen，前几年被评为全世界工程领域引用率排名第7的人，也不是IEEE fellow. |

不可否认他们的研究都是一流的，但总感觉离"院士"还差一点。倒是知道或者认识的

和society没有关系，一个society的fellow人数没有要求是society member 0.1%这个
限制（而且大多会员都是多个society的member）
society负责的提名推荐，由ieee总部的fellow committee最后来控制这个ieee会员总
数的0.1%

我知道有的society推荐的通过率只有10%-20%。。。

基本上每年每个领域会有大概10个左右的人被选上，提名和选举好像都是要peer提名的
，专家评审。我搜了一下这些人的背景，都蛮厉害的，最近几年比较高产。摘录一段来

实在是想不通，这样一个人格缺陷，道德品质有大问题，学术水准一般般的Zucai Suo
，居然评上了AAAS fellow？
AAAS fellow应该是人格友善，学术严谨，待人诚恳，道德垂范，在学术领域培养大批
杰出人才的，具有引领学术领域前沿科学实力的领军人物。但是这一些品质，完全跟
Suo沾不上边啊！
这种所谓的AAAS fellow，究竟有没有贿选，还是盲目地凑数，无从而知。但是，可以
肯定的是，AAAS的评审过程不透明，标准不清晰，没有公示而直接公布结果，其评选质
量非常令人质疑！ |

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a p
erson with an extraordinary
record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. A brief
citation is issued to new Fellows
describing their accomplishments and the total number selected in any on
e year does not exceed
one-tenth percent of the total voting Institute membership.

补充了张锦云学长的毕业年份，补充了Bin Zhao学长，感谢accueil。
IEEE Fellow（国际电气电子工程师协会院士）是国际电气电子学术界最高荣誉，当
选IEEE Fellow的清华学子已有31位，以很大优势居全国第一位。
去年有4位清华校友当选（都是清华毕业），其中三位是清华校内教授；今年有9位校
友当选，两位校内教授，说明清华校内的学术水平越来越高，向国际化接轨。今年当
选的校友有三位来自工业界，可以预见，以后在工业界的清华校友影响力也将越来越
大。

下，也会给年纪不是很老，但是对某个领域和society做出突出贡献的fellow。我就知
道一个是50多岁就是life fellow的。 |

life fellow不是什么荣誉称号，就是岁数到了就是了
而且不管是不是fellow，上life都是一样的
member就成了life member
senior member就成了life senior member
fellow就成了life fellow

因为这个主要靠关系，你提名我我提名你投票之类的，所以已经有不少fellow的学校很
容易评出来更多的fellow

要求:
Fellow Qualifications:
A Fellow, one who has attained a membership grade of distinction, at the time
of advancement shall be a corporate member of the Society, shall have been
responsible for significant engineering achievements, and shall have had
either
a. not less than 10 years of active practice and 10 years of continuous
corporate membership in ASME, or
b. 20 years of active practice and 5 years of continuous corporate membership
in ASM |
