辈。如果有什么说的不对或者naive的地方还请多多包涵。
虽然刚开始读phd，但其实已经感觉到压力很大。以后想做genomics，一方面是自己的
确很有兴趣，另外一方面也是想做点跨学科的东西，以后如果科研做不下去，去
industry survival的时候或许有点优势。
或者干脆说：我想像人家mass spec的人学一门“手艺”，以后有口饭吃，过上朝九晚
五的生活，养活自己一个人就可以了。而不是做postdoc太多的不确定的因素，每天都
在着急。
1.请问在industry或者大学做genomics，具体到底是做什么呢？因为大家都是把那些
sample送到公司，公司帮你做，那是不是说在公司操作illumina这样的仪器也算是一个
饭碗？（就好比做mass spec的人）我们这种biology phd training出来的可能胜任这
样的工作么？另外，拿到测序结果后的bioinformatics也算另外一种工作吧？

多一些的领域。象物理中理论物理对数学要求高一些，实验物理就比较繁琐一些。
编程那点东西也是很繁琐的，是把别人开发好的成千上万 API，module 拼在一起用一
用。学起来不见得比bioinformatics更清爽。不过cs的应用面广，工作好找，工资也就
高了。
你先需要把自己的目标弄清楚。你是想写出一个大家都喜欢用的程序呢，还是想找出一
些 biomarker，drug targets。有了一个清楚的目标，再去学需要的技术。
写程序也很 boring 的。问问 macs 的作者 Tao Liu，看看每天对付mail-list 上的那
么多问题，不停的找出 bug，debug 一个程序是不是也蛮烦人的。
sequencing成本越来越低，越来越多的data要产生。所以我是很看好这一行的。所以本
科是读生物的；然后来了美国半路转到bioinformatics。但我觉得很郁闷的是，

PhD到高年级了，要考虑毕业找工作的事情了。以前一直打算在学术界混，不过这年头
学术界太难找到faculty位置了，我们实验室我导师欣赏的u一个博士后，就因为英语不
好（法国人，有很重的口音），面试n个学校都没有拿到offer，黯然去英国做资深博士
后了。我老英语比他只差不好，实在很难在这边找到教职。原本打算回国做青教的，但
是女朋友喜欢国外，不想回国，所以还得考虑在这边找工作。个人有一定的编程底子，
也比较喜欢编程。本科生物背景，有6年perl编程经验，三年C++编程经验，入门级R/
MySQL经验（最近用的太少，忘的差不多了），做的都是bioinformatics相关的学术项
目。现在做的东西比较偏统计模型，熟悉基本的统计模型，用C++写过较复杂的MCMC程

发帖数: 1035 | 11 如果你是找 bioinformatics 得 postdoc 的话，你的背景不错，花点时间提高下编程
能力更好。
在 bioinformatics 的实验室做数据分析，对编程的能力没有你想象中那么看重，毕竟
每天的工作不是写软件，多数还是数据分析，在数据分析过程中发展方法；你对数据的
理解，对生物问题的理解，是你的优势。
当然，编程是bioinformatics 的基本技能之一，所以你需要会coding，因为这个是数
据处理的基本技能。一般是 BASH +（PYTHON/PERL/R）；最好能吃苦，具有巨大的学习
潜力，达到 bioinformatics 的coding要求其实很容易。
你的情况可以先找比较 junior 的老板，完成第一步到纯 bioinforamtics 的转换，我
估计你的 coding 还需要提高，所以首先是学习 coding 和 bioinformatics 的数据处
理，这些东西有人手把手带的话，上手很快。
rosaland 可以刷，帮助不大但是不能说没有。面试一般会 review code，你最好有几
个拿得出手的 code，不需要很长，最好是自己写的。 |

RT，我最近接到两个postdoc的offer：一个是machine learning，研究里算法/理论和
应用各占一半一半吧。另一个是bioinformatics，研究是用计算模型和machine
learning算法来分析大量且高维的genomic data。
这两个offer的location和学校排名都不相上下，我自己打算走academia最后申教职。
我本身是machine learning背景出身，对bioinformatics从来没接触过。
想在这里请问一下大家，征询下意见：
1. 这两个方向具体未来发展前景怎样？我没做过bioinformatics，对这个领域的发展
不太清楚，请大家不吝赐教。
2. 我自己本身对证machine learning的理论类的有点做烦的感觉（应用类没烦）。但
在这几日看bioinformatics的时候，觉得更偏应用一些，觉得如果纯做应用会不会对未
来发展不大好，大家觉得呢？

的主要方向可能是以理论和方法为主，我参加的一些machine learning的会基本上都是
在现有几大重要的算法和理论上优化各个流程，generalization，regularization等等
，别的方向不熟不做评论。而生物信息，尽管沾了informatics的边，研究的方向还是
偏向生物的，是需要实验验证的，是解决实际问题的。用什么算法，写什么软件，做什
么数据对我们来说完全是一个工具，我们的最终目的是解释并预测实验结果，并且应用
到model animal，甚至病人身上。当然bioinformatics领域也有专门搞算法的，DNA序
列比对，蛋白结构预测的，这些同学很多都是CS出身，而这些看似简单的问题至今也没
有人解决。（我以前研究生的导师是做理论物理的，超级大牛，在蛋白结构上用了一堆
巨fancy的string theory的算法，成果还是很有限。）但是对大多数搞bioinformatics
的人来说，对生物系统如何调节，运作有一个系统全面的认识，并且能够把数据，计算

发帖数: 587 | 21 纠正几个常识性错误，（1）参加了几个ML的会，也不知道你听懂了多少，来概括CS的
research。。。（2）bioinformatics里面有算法性很强的，比如gene alignment,
protein structure prediction，但这只是小部分。而且就这部分来说，比如你以前导
师所谓的理论物理大牛来搞这个，就还是有点不到位，或者说这就是。理论物理大牛投
身类似的领域，三十年前还可以，现在已经out了。（3）关于做数据，统计，数理分析
，如果你说做某些bioinformatics里面博士训练不比做compiler／system的CS phd差，
这个是的，但是这个比较本身就没意义。如果你指的是和做ML／DM／NLP／AI的CS phd
比，那就too over claim了。
btw，你觉得bioinformatics本行很好工作，那为什么不继续找本行。现在所谓的DS很
杂，很多都是data analyst但是打着DS的旗号，找人的要求和待遇也是差别很大。但是
就对finance来说，好的职位基本上是看到bio类似背景的，第一轮简历就刷下去了（除

本人是个EE的fresh Ph.D.，做Bioinformatics五年了，现在在美国找工作，曾经try过
大药厂没有成功，现在手上有个机会，是Bioinformatics Scientist在一个刚成立的研
究药的小公司。公司里有好几个group，bioinformatics group是一个相对小的group，
只有几个人。
现在主要是不知道这样一个职位对我以后career development的影响是什么？career
path是什么？做几年，估计我能成senior Bioinformatics Scientist，然后再怎么办？
是不是还有可能跳回学术界？
很重要的一点是，如果过几年想回国发展了，国内有类似的职位么？好像上海张江有做
药的公司，但是不知道要不要做生物信息学的人。
本人现在正在迷惘中，希望有人给我指点迷津！十分感谢！！！

发帖数: 2518 | 40 坦白说对genomics/sequencing技术还是很有兴趣的。也喜欢交叉科学。而且sequencing成本越来越低，越来越多的data要产生。所以我是很看好这一行的。所以本科是读生物的；然后来了美国半路转到bioinformatics。但我觉得很郁闷的是，bioinformatician好像都是在跑别人写好的program。做alignment就是BWA/bowtie；然后call SNP就是GATK/samtools啥的。也就是自学一点bash code来做一些很平常的处理；然后大规模的fastq就写一点简单的python来pre-processing
一点成就感都没有。或者说一点技术含量都没有。感觉人家CS的，学到了技术，学到了那就是自己的；以后用的到。而我们这种随便run个人家写好的program，感觉是个人就可以学会。
