南泉因趙州問。如何是道。泉云。平常心是道。州云。還可趣向否。泉云。擬向即
乖。州云。不擬爭知是道。泉云。道不屬知。不屬不知。知是妄覺。不知是無記。若真
達不擬之道。猶如太虛廓然洞豁。豈可強是非也。州於言下頓悟
Jōshū［赵州］ earnestly asked Nansen［南泉］, “What is the Way [道]?”
Nansen answered, “The ordinary mind［平常心］ is the Way .” Jōshū asked,
“Should I direct myself toward it or not?” Nansen said, “If you try to
turn toward［擬向］ it, you go against ［即乖］ it.” Jōshū asked, “If I
do not try to turn toward it, how can I know that it is the Way［爭知是道］?
” Nansen answered, “The Way does not belong to ［不屬］ knowing ［知］ or
not-knowing ［不知］. Knowing is delusion［妄覺］; not-knowing is a blank
consciousness［無記］. When you have really reached the true Way beyond all
doubt, you will find it as vast and boundless as the great empty firmament［
猶如太虛廓然洞豁］. How can it be talked about on a level of right and wrong
［是非］?” At these words , Jōshū was suddenly enlightened［頓悟］.

無門曰。南泉被趙州發問。直得瓦解氷消分疎不下。趙州縱饒悟去。更參三十年始得
MUMON’S COMMENTARY： Nansen was asked a question by Jōshū, and Nansen’s
base was shattered and melted away［瓦解氷消］. He could not justify himself
［分疎不下］. Even though Jōshū has come to realization［趙州縱饒悟去］,
he will have to delve into it for another thirty years before he can realize
it fully.

頌曰
春有百花秋有月 夏有涼風冬有雪
若無閑事挂心頭 便是人間好時節
THE VERSE:
The spring flowers, the moon in autumn, 春有百花秋有月
The cool breezes of summer, the winter’s snow; 夏有涼風冬有雪
If idle concerns do not cloud the mind, 若無閑事挂心頭
This is man’s happiest season. 便是人間好時節
We have various delights in the four seasons. What more do we want? “If
idle concerns do not cloud the mind” means that when we are detached from
all useless matters such as delusive and discriminating feelings or thoughts
, our mind is at peace. Then every day is truly good. We then enjoy each day
as the happiest day of our lives.
