roads of NYC. Drivers, motorcyclists and even our usual co-conspirators
the cyclists, all stepped aside. The road belong to us today.
It sure feels great to own the road for even a day. We zipped down the road
with millions cheering us on. These are most likely the millions that were
welcomed to the Land of the Free by the Lady in the Harbor. Bands are
playing, music is loud, people screamming words of encouragements, witty
signs are home made. In this town, this only happens once a year and we
are in it. It is hard not to get caught up on the moment.
Today, if you brought your own iPod, you are a fool for there’s virtually
nonestop live music. Bands of all imaginable variety were lining up all
along the route. Around mile 8 there was a talented band playing London
Burning by Clash, it sounded fabulous. I considered it my all time favorite
. It sure energized me momentarily. Just imagine, your favorite song at
the right time. Hell, if they played that near mile-24, I couldda knocked
off a minute or two. By Harlem, the music turns to rap, I dig rap music
too so I found out.
Clearly, fun was had by all.
Since marathon Sunday, I have already ran several recovery runs. As you
can see, I follow no rules. A few people drifted by to offer kind words,
some said l beat Apollo’s time. That was amusing. Wasn’t he the guy the
embodiment of a world renowned athlete? In this game of endurance, we are
equal. That’s cool.
For 2011, I tried to return to basic.
Stayed away from endless pursuit of new gears, fancy shoes or even a
roughage diet. I rather not share my training plans as people would
gasping in disbelieve of my laziness.
Step one, ditched my watch & GPS. Haven’t strapped on the HRM since last
year. I still desired the Garmin 210/610, can’t resist a piece of digital
gizmo. It is just that the usage level may not justify the investment.
The last thing I want is a drawer full of yesterday’s technology. As
much as I love shinny gears, I dislike clutter. One look at my garage
reminds me I gotta to clean it up this weekend.
Same with shoes, I have little sense of brand loyalty. After four or five
pairs of Asics, I have enough of the Cris-crossing stripes, time to try
Saucony, dare I say Inov8. None of that is by design or to be contarian.
I resisted buying new shoes until my last two pairs both have torn apart.
Great, shoe now breaths better. It’s no frugality trust me. I do have
a tendency of trying new things. Not for a miracle fix, but just to mess
with the established traditionalists.
The night before the marathon, I used toss and turn all night. For some
unknown reason, no more. It will be fun not a chore.
I feel slightly guilty for running a marathon and reporting back. It’s
like going to an extravagant restaurant and giving a rave review. That’s
like saying the obvious which no one gives a damn.
There are the take away moments.
Crossing the Verrazano Bridge was amazing, not one but two helicopters
hovering at the other end. A FYI for the out-of-towners, just days ago,
NYPD put out a statement saying they are equipped and ready to shoot down
any threads. So, it was for protection believe it or not. The other was
likely NBC live coverage.
Crossing into Brooklyn, I notice an Asian dude running with a pristine kick.
A classic running style that looks purely effortless. Somebody should
capture that on film and upload to the NARR site. Use it as training
material for the grace of God. I can only imitate that for five steps, and
right away accept that I’m no running prodigy.
The fun starts right there. The young buck with the high kick was none
other than Yrreko. I can’t believe my luck he paced me for the next 15
miles. Ladies and gents, if you wanted to make good time, get yourself a
pacer. I’m 100% serious. For some unknown reasons, running with a pacer
gives you a sense calm and serenity. He is the Moses that parsed the sea
so your people can have peace. Occasionally, or most of the time, we pass
other runners. Witnessing a few amusing outfits here and there. Runners
hi-fiveing the spectators. All the good stuff.
Up and over Queensboro Bridge was the point where Yrreko had to slow down.
An effect of AT. Surely hope he fully recover soon. Don’t anyone forget
there are two young guns in Philly. He is and will be sub-3 material on
return. Haile battled AT too, so make a full recovery soon.
One side note, I notice YR was wearing long sleeve. More than once, I
almost encourage him go sleeveless but decided not to. It turns out there
was ulterior motive. Good luck to YR, congrats for winning two prices on
one Sunday.
The rest of the race was biz as usual. Up First avenue which was only about
5 blocks from my apartment. You cannot get anymore home turf than that.
The toughest part is usually as you enter Fifth avenue near mile 22-24.
There’s a bit of hill on that stretch. Not too big a deal if you do any
hill trainning. As you enter Central Park on 86th street. It was pure
home turf. I knew where every crack & pothole is on the pavement. I
can probably run blindfolded. It is safe to say 90% of my mileage I ran
thought that stretch. How’s that for home field advantage.
Down and around Columbus circle where I once saw Lance Armstrong ran his
marathon, I knew my time was good enough for Boston again.
I decided to go with no watch or GPS this time. About three weeks before,
I tested my fitness level by running a 1:31 half. The goal was to correctly
assess a workable medium-hard pace for the big event. It was right on
target.
Overall Time: 3:13:36
When someone visits Paris. They says they will always have Paris. That is
to say fond memory will last a lifetime. | v***l

NYC Marathon was definitely my best marathon experience ever.
I love NY!
One regret was that I didn't even spot a Chinese flag along the course.For
sure I missed the one put up by the NACRA.
