language as a lingua franca for the convenience and
effectiveness of communication for us. when many who are not
in the linguistics circle refer to it as "the Chinese
language", it is in fact "the standard variety among the
many dialects of the Chinese language". like all other
varieties, it is just a variety. but as a lingua franca, it
enjoys a special status.
