How much you pay for your vocation? ( ( $1500 for 5-7 days so how much per
hour)
Calculate how much you gain:
( your cash earned $100 + tickets esc. - your time value - your wast tine

then to see if it is truly worthwhile..
btw, most of these type of presentation takes overall over 2.5 hrs.
but if you can get a great deal on hotel due to presentation, it might be OK

family issue. Then it's worthwhile. Don't think about "independency" too
much. Job is just a job, to make money and raise your family and kids.
I already regret to give up a Research AP position, and now live far away
from my family/kids. Although with a tenure-track position and doubled
salary, I'm not happy at all!

You will be in late 30's when you get your PHD. You may find it is hard for
you to find a position in prestigious universities. More likely you will
find a position in a teaching school which is not high paid and is difficult
to get research funding. Taking into account the time, energy and
opportunity cost associated with PHD and the time you miss with your kids, I
'd view the PHD path may not be worthwhile at all. |

Indeed, there are many Ph.D. programs that can be closed. The first one on
my list to close would be the Religion program in Columbia university. Why
do we need Ph.D.'s specializing in religion? Leave that area to the rabis
and ministers!

my impression of him:
1) He can’t follow through in his project. He doesn’t seem to have the
ability to finish anything. I feel he has a pretty easy project that he can
finish. If I put a postdoc on it, it could probably be done in two weeks.
His progress is excruciatingly slow. He always has a hard time with
deadlines.
2) He doesn’t work very hard. He is often sick and doesn’t show up at

Also, A lot of funding/grants mean a lot of hardworking, busy, being angery
with students, bad health, etc. while the gain is not much at all ( a little
sallary -3 months, a little increased sallary.
If you have tenture already, a lot of grants is not worthwhile. A couple of

airline tickets for candidates, some are very strict. If it's the latter
case, you won't be able to persuade them. Simply ask them, and if they tell
you no, then no means no.
If it's a reputable institute, I don't think two airline tickets are
worthwhile for them to ruin their reputation.

stonybrook: $6,900 (in-state) + fees
it seems rutgers has a better stat MS program than stonybrook, but is it

not be cost effective to form an LLC. Because you will then have to pay LLC
fees every year and deal with all the paperwork. It might be worthwhile just
to buy landlord insurance (which protects you against fire, flood, theft,
etc) and buy umbrella insurance (which protects you against lawsuit claims).
If the rental business grow, then you want to isolate issues on one
properties from another, LLC is better as it is also |

when you are above 59.5?
401k, normally the company matches 100% for up to 8%. Even if you withdraw
it with penalty. You still get high profit.
Based on above two points, for people who will stay in USA for next few
years but eventually go back to China. It is still worthwhile for invest in
IRA and 401k.
I'm a new bie. Please give me more details if I'm wrong.
