My guess is what you said above holds true for everyone - string tension is
just a number, until one actually tries to vary and feel it, and compare.
The feel of hitting a ball is an overall subjective experience, affected by
many factors like specific racket, string, string tension, even the tennis
ball, etc. So only much experimenting can shed any meaningful light on what
feels right -- guided by some general theoretical understanding, of course.
