They Looked Askance - American Indians and Chinese in the

Comparing the legacies of Gauss, Pasteur and Darwin
Jürgen Schmidhuber
Sir
Kevin Padian's enthusiastic Essay on Charles Darwin ('Darwin's enduring
legacy' Nature 451, 632–634; 2008) asks whether any single individual made
so many lasting contributions to a broad area of science as Darwin did to
biology. Let us remember that the nineteenth century also included Carl
Friedrich Gauss, often called the greatest mathematician since antiquity,
and Louis Pasteur,...

THIS appears to be so-called not because it was used by missionaries (
although that was probably the case) but because it was the position
missionaries are supposed to have advocated for the 'lesser races' they were
preaching to. There seem to be two reasons for this preference. The face-to
-face position was thought more 'civilised' than other 'animalistic' ones
and, secondly, it literally put the man on top. In this way the position
embodied two key aspects of the nineteenth century middle-cl...

The new tone of civility the liberals are pursuing apparently includes
wishing violent death on Sarah Palin. Recently in Missoula, Montana, an
otherwise high quality performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado by the
Missoula Children's Theater had the script altered with the approval of the
MCT director Curt Olds to call for the beheading of Sarah Palin in the tune
"As some Day it May Happen (I've Got a Little List)" and thus singing about
her "not being missed," as the Wall St. J...

The End of the Euro?
by Bruce Thornton (Research Fellow and W. Glenn Campbell and Rita Ricardo-
Campbell National Fellow, 2009–10, 2010–11)
Good riddance to a bad idea.
The champions of the European Union once touted it as a “bold new
experiment in living” and “the best hope in an insecure age.” But these
days “fear is coursing through the corridors of Brussels,” as the B.B.C.
reported in September. Such fear is justified, for the nations of Europe are
struggling with fiscal problems that challe...

来自主题: USANews版 - The Left's Rights Scam
By Steve McCann
The left invariably frames its policy pronouncements under the mantle of so-
called "rights" that only the government can guarantee. The implication
being that all citizens are entitled and guaranteed, by virtue of living in
the United States, to what is defined as a "right." Much of this current
approach by the so-called Progressives stems from the State of the Union
address delivered by Franklin Roosevelt in 1944 in which he laid out what is
commonly referred to as the "Secon...
