看Bowen自己的回忆1947年Marine的分队在一个秦皇岛的营地被共军包围了,共军要求
他们投降,Marine坚持了一晚上后成功撤离。有少数Marine之前出去喝啤酒被共军俘虏。
Bowen他们夜里挖了很多散兵坑,其中一个挖到了一箱子骨头,但夜里很吓人他们就把
箱子又埋上了。
1941年太平洋战争开始前北京协和医院把北京人头盖骨的箱子给撤离的Marine带走,运
往秦皇岛计划上米国军舰,但期间战争爆发,军舰搁浅,Marine成了日军俘虏,头盖骨
箱子下落不明。后来看估计是被仓促埋在了秦皇岛的营地 (Camp Holcomb)。

我去过大概20个美国城市,看到的美国二三线城市特征有很多,但本质性的差别,尤其
是和中国同等城市、乃至世界范围内同等城市的差别,还是在城市规划的理念上。
而这之中最关键的,应该是下面这种现象:
1、美国城市规划犯下的一个可怕错误
截图的这座城市亚特兰大,算是典型的美国二线城市。而红圈圈出来的就是美国中小型
城市普遍存在,但在世界其他地方都非常罕见的一个现象——
全国性高速公路,在美国叫Interstate,也就是地图上蓝底白字编号的道路,会直接穿
越城市最中心的地带,乃至把市中心拦腰截断!
举其他一些城市的例子,我们用卫星地图来更直观地表示。比如这是位于美国中东部的
城市辛辛那提:
位于南部的达拉斯:
位于中北部的明尼阿波利斯:
这几个都是美国很典型的城市规划现象。这种规划看起来似乎像中国城市的高架桥,但
仔细看或者亲自来到实地就能立刻看出它们的差异了。
从地图上首先可以看出,这是道路都是美国的国家级州际高速公路(以蓝底白字表示)

You are right - the original owner added it.
Not much back yard space there. All hill area. Most of the flat portion has
been used for the septic system, especially the drain field/bed. And there
is a big deck built and a kids play ground as well. Hate to destroy them.
There will be too much work to dig the hill. There are 3 levels of houses
above and I guess they might oppose to the digging.
There is some flat space available at the front yard. The hired contractor
for front expansion called me

That's a huge project. I'd try from inside first to see if it works...really
do not want to dig that much. Actually I doubt the water leaks from a nail
damaged crack inside.

Not for normal fence. Depending on the fence and you local soil (what kind
of dirt) and freeze line, digging 2 to 3 feet should be enough. You can rent
a auger to dig the hole, put the post in (make sure it is vertical, pour
concrete, recheck quickly to make sure it is still in right position and
vertical), you may or may not need a support structure to hold it in place (
kind of depend on how thick your concrete was)

I thought you are comparing a house with basement with a house without a
basement.
Anysite is possible to dig a basement, although a slopped site is easier to
dig for a walk out basement.

it only make sense to compare LO/FB to WO in the same region.
there is zoning and developer decides if a site can be LO/FB or WO, if you
dig it into WO, you will have problem and wont be approved by developer or
the city, as far as I know. well, unless you can dig around the entire area
and change all the zoning, like in simcity...
