I4:
1st order force: balanced
2nd order force: imbalanced
1st order moment: balanced
2nd order moment: balanced
so, for an I4, you can easily correct its vibration by adding a pair of
double speed balance shafts
I5:
1st order force: balanced
2nd order force: balanced
1st order moment: imbalanced
2nd order moment: imbalanced
here's the issue: you can probably make up for the 1st order moment but the
2nd order moment on an I5 is

it has only one turbo.
ok, you can say "show me a turbo I4 with 2 turbos"
this is not the issue. you can use a twin-scroll turbo on a high-output
turbo I4
even on others that have no twin-scroll turbo, such as the 2.0T on the TTS,
the exhaust manifold can still be
separated in a similar way. how can you do this on an I5?

for overlap compared to i4 and for better packaging compared to i6 esp in
FWD applications. you can't have everything all at once. at least you CAN
balance an i5, but there's no way you can give i4 any overlap.
as for turbo setup--if you can't use parallel twin turbo, try sequential
twins.

I5. why do I need overlap? to reduce
the size of the flywheel? come on...
as for I6... do I really need a transverse I6 on an FWD? I don't think so.
why not just a normal V6?

and exhaust flow (for the turbo) for an I5

I guess they'll phase out their I5s gradually in the future.

1992. the diesel 5 cylinder is from vw.
