2011 NYC Triathlon – My first tri and next one will be a PR for sure
Swim (1.5KM): 26:44
T1: 5:53
Bike (40KM): 1:21:21
T2: 2:49
Run (10KM): 48:39
Total: 2:45:23
Got up 4am since the transition area will be closed by 5:30am. It’s
interesting to see so many people hung over on the nyc subway at 4:30am. A
clif bar washed down by powerade for the breakfast.
Got to the transition area by 5am and it’s raining pretty heavily. A lot of
people had their fancy bikes wrapped because of the overnight rain. My
single speed didn’t need to worry about that.
Pumped my tire to 110psi. Didn’t want it to go 120psi because of the
slippery/bumpy road condition. The transition was very crowded and mine is
at the far end of a row at the corner. It sucks that I had to run so much
more at the transition.
Setup my stuff and out of the transition by 5:20am and walked one mile to
the swim start. Now came the long-long-long wait for the start. I guess you
had to deal with that for a huge race with 5000 people. Another clif bar and
a gu while waiting.
This year NYC tri swim started by wave. Elite first, women/VIP second and
man last. Elder age group got into water earlier also. After all the woman
and “VIP” are gone, there is another 20 minutes wait. Then it’s the turn
for man. So I was at the very end of the wave. There were probably 50 more
people behind me. So this was a chasing race for me.
Swim:
By the time I stand at the actual start, it’s already 8:15am. Almost 3
hours wait! I could have got more sleep!
The water was very choppy and there was not current assistant at all when I
started. When elite and women started race one hour earlier, the current was
very strong downstream. Some people were literally lying there and current
carried them along.
I felt I didn’t wake up till I actually got into the Hudson River. The
breathing was quite difficult in the beginning and I was trying to set into
the rhythm. But somehow I was struggling quite a bit today. By 750m marker,
I finally got into some rhythm, started to breathe easier and caught up with
some people. By 1250m marker, I finally felt warmed up and start to speed
up. But it’s time to get out of the water.
26:44 was 7 minutes slower than my expectation.
Bike:
T1 was tough. It’s is a 400m run out of the water to the bike on the rough
concrete surface. Then another 300m run with cleat shoes on the uneven
surface before you can mount the bike. Changing gear was much easier
compared with the run in and out. Another gel down the throat in T1.
Right out of T1 was a 15% short climb. I was pretty worried about this climb
yesterday because I didn’t have a granny gear to deal with it. Actually at
the race, I attacked it fairly easily.
I decided to go shirtless since my cycling jersey was too baggy. It felt
awesome on the bike without a shirt.
So the bike part was pretty much as planned – passing all the fancy bikes
in my sight. Passed so many cervelo, trek, specialized or whatever fancy
bikes out there. For the entire course, only passed by one cervelo and
another specialized on the downhill. It was simply no way for me to catch
them, I was already on 100rmp on the downhill.
The bike course was quite tough. A lot of rolling hills. According to the
GPS log, there were more than 2000ft climb for 40KM. Pretty much stand up
whenever there was a little slope when others were shifting their gears. It
was such an adrenaline rush to pass hard peddling people while I was doing
tango on my single speed. By the end of the course, strong head wind slowed
me down quite a bit.
1:21:21 time sucks. My goad was 1h15m. I guess faster bikers were all gone
and those passed by me are slower bikers. 2nd gel at the midway.
Run:
T2 was a bit easier than T1. Shorter run, but still I was almost tripped by
the bumpy road. Somehow I couldn’t find my last gel for the run, which was
not good.
My inner quads started to scream as soon as I started running. It’s time to
pay the price for the single speed and all those uphill dances. I guess
poor hydration on the bike was also a factor. I only drank 10oz powerade on
the bike and another 10oz in T2. I rushed to get some cytomax before the
climb out of T2 onto the road again.
It was painful to climb with cramped quads. Worse, by the top of the hill,
side stitch joining the screaming symphony!
First mile along 72nd street was one of the worst miles I had. I need to
firmly press my lower left ab to deal with the side stitch and be careful
with the quads so that I can still move ahead.
Finally after entering central park, there was an aid station with gel. A
gel down and another cup of cytomax, the quads were eased a bit but the side
stitch was still playing with me.
So I hold my ab and kept pushing forward. BTW, along the way, I was still
passing people and never got passed by anyone. Especially on the harleam
hill, aka “heartbreak hill”, most people were walking but I ran the entire
way with 8 minute pace.
Side stitch finally gave up by mile 5, I started to push last mile. Quads
were still shaking, but I didn’t want to be slower than 8 min average pace.
That would be a shame for someone coming from runner.
After a sprint finish, my quads totally gave up and I was helped into the
tent for a quickmassage.
I am ok with 48:39 given the rough condition, even though my goal was sub 45
minutes.
Anyway, it’s my first triathlon and my bike is even cheaper than one time
rental of fancy bikes. The result is worse than my expectation but I guess
it gives me an opportunity to race for a PR at next tri.
