Last Saturday, my wife finally agreed to go to TS with me. Got there around
2 PM and sat down at a new
$200-max table with $1/$2 blinds. The table was loose and passive.
I was pretty card dead for the first two hours. A young guy with glasses
joined the table then. The young
guy was aggressive and loved to talk. He often made preflop-raises to $20 to
pick up the blinds from
limpers and flashed his trash hand with a smirk. He won a big pot with set-
over-set against an old man
who looked like a kind grandpa. The young guy had pocket Qs and the grandpa
had pocket 7s, with a
rainbow board of Q7x. He did a fist pump and said to grandpa “It is a
coolerrr, sirrrr!”. Grandpa just shook
his head.
A regular joined the table, sitting to my immediate left. He soon called a
big river raise from the young guy.
The young guy showed the nut flush. The regular has a K-high flush. The
regular was biting his lips. Then
came a limped pot and the flop was A98 rainbow. The regular bet $10. The
young gun raised to $25. The
turn was a Jack. Suddenly the regular sprung into action. He shouted “why
did you raise?! How about I go in
now!? Now you can’t raise any more!” The young guy said “The raise was
standard!” and flipped over his
hole cards A8s, a made hand of two pairs. “You made a straight with T7
right?”. He hollywooded for a while
then folded. The regular said “I don’t have a straight. I have KQ.” Young
gun said “why don’t you show
it?”“No, I am not going to show it”. These two guys went back and forth
for quite a while. After several
hands, the regular told me he usually played in $500 max games and in those
games such a bluff wouldn’t
have worked. I was not so sure if I believed he was really bluffing. It was
a nice way to get the young guy
off-balance though.
Next came my big hand. I was UTG+1 and the UTG raised to $10. I called with
JJ, hoping to hit a set in a
multi-way pot. Seven people in total called, including the young guy in SB.
$70 pot already preflop! Flop was
J66, two clubs! I have Jacks full of sixes. Checked around, the preflop
raiser bet $79 all-in. I smooth called,
hoping to suck in more players, with hands like flush draw, over pairs (
although they should have raised,
esp. Aces and Kings), 6x or Jx. Folded around to the young guy who put on a
show, asking me “what do you
got bro?”. I feigned indifference, watching BYU beating Florida on TV. He
asked to count my chips. The
regular said it was $155. The dealer and I counted and it was exactly $155!!
! Unbelievable! The young gun
huffed and puffed and finally went all-in. I instant-called. He was always
the smart ass: “you have jackets?” I
turned over my cards. The young gun had A6o, trip six with top kicker. He
needed running aces or the case
6. The UTG+1 had A9 clubs, flush draw and drawing dead. Both turn and river
were blanks. I won a $612
pot!
This table was nice but was getting tougher with the regular and the young
guy. I was tired after grinding
for three hours. I far exceeded my profit target so I decided to pack it in.
The regular said “Nice hand! That
is a hand you wait all day for!” The young guy said “Wow! Hit and run!”.
I said “You play better than me so I
got to go!”. It was half truth and half sarcasm. I didn’t care for his
trash talk but I didn’t know if I would
have played differently in his position. He thought I might have a flush
draw or a Jack or a worse 6. In terms
of reciprocal dollar, I only won from the preflop raiser who went all in on
the flop. And I thank for poker god
for that.

it looks to me, both guys are very experienced players in small stake, don't
let their fake trash talks confuse you, hehe.
a "LAG" guy in 1/2 live can raise little and lay down flopped A8 two pair on
a "safe" (to amatuers) board, he's not LAG at all but a very dangerous
opponent. his hand reading skill is defintely above avg. and he's
disciplined.
the regular didn't bluff him, i think.
as for the A6 vs JJ hand, it's a cooler to anyone in a small multi-way
raised pot, even durrrr will go broke here. you played JJ on the
conservative side preflop, which worked for you. but if they notice this
pattern, they'll play accordingly later.

Yes, the stack size is not deep enough to avoid all in for this A6 guy.

sharp analysis, Fryking! Looks like you recovered from the nightmarish
hospital run after all...
I don't like raising preflop here because 1) I am not sure what to do facing
a reraise; 2) this table is playing loose in calling preflop raises so I am
likely to get what I wanted: a multiway pot. I do play conservatively in
cash-games. Why shoot for small profits with significant risk when you can
win a lot with minimal risk? Of course this approach requires a lot of
patience, and winning enough small pots till the arrival of a big hand.

you did well and left the table with a profit, hehe.
a lot of "play for fun" type of players make routine big mistakes by
believing in "you cannot push me around" or "i'll get a big hand to crash
you in the end". however, they often find themselves losing more to those "
lucky" guys.
it's only a game, not an IQ test, not an ego fight, nobody knows nobody,
winners take money and go home.
