b*e 发帖数: 3845 | 1 My backhand slice is pretty good when the incoming ball is low. The lower
incoming ball is, the better slice I hit. However, when the incoming ball is
medium high or high, especially no-pace high ball, my BH slice tends to
float. This is probably a good lesson to learn Federer like BH slice, to hit
good BH slice at around shoulder or chest level.

1. try to change the pace off a backhand rally
2. sometime get a little lazy
of couse hit a Forehand is a good solution too. Sometimes a heavy deep
topspin towards backhand side maybe a little risky to run around.

long long long ago, which uses Sampras and Federer as example, pretty much
talk about the same stuff, shoulder turn, box, slice forward and not open up
, etc.
One thing I notice though, when he take back his racquet, his racquet face
is quiet open; notice how fed's take back, the racquet face is closed,
directly facing the back of his head. This will make an impact on how you
slice, especially on those high heavy balls.

I'm going to try it. There may be some similarity between high backhand
slice and high backhand volley. I am always hitting much weaker high
backhand volley than high forehand volley.

| b*********s 发帖数: 6757 | 6 High backhand volley is a tough one, I was told the best shot is just carve
it cross court short, the key for this is keep your eye on the ball and
shoulder turned. Often, we tend to look at where we want to hit and open up
the shoulder.
If the ball is high, 2 hbh swing volley is always a choice. This may take
practice fore that I tend to recall this option only after I hit the ball....

Are you sure you are carving it right? If execute properly, it will land
within 50%ish of the service box, the ball won't bounce higher than your
knee and with the side spin going outwards... even if the someone get to it,
they'll most likely dig it up, and it's a easier put away volley then.

| b*********s 发帖数: 6757 | 10 this also depends on the level of tennis you are playing. At the lower
levels, player's drives are not as reliable, and key for winning a match is
to make less mistake. But at a higher level, you really don't get many high
floaters, so when you do, you should take advantage of it, simply slice it
to keep it the court even to chance the pace is not going to cut it.

| | | K****D 发帖数: 30533 | 11 The easier way is to make your slice more aggressive, rather
than to master the high ball drive. The latter is significantly
harder for mediocre players.
As players get older, it's harder and harder for them to run around,
then you start to see a whole bunch of good old guys with very good
slices, with precision and reliability.

| b*********s 发帖数: 6757 | 12 not sure about the point you are trying convey here, are you trying to say
slice is a better shot selection for high no pace floater?
Sure, you should learn how to slice any kind of ball. Depending on your age,
your movement, your level of playing, you pick your shot base on whatever
you are most comfortable with. But tennis in general, if you can run around,
you should run around to hit a fh (unless you bh is better than your fh),
if you can drive the ball, drive it (occasionally mix it in a drop, a chip
etc). As for those old guys you mentioned, I would say most of them hardly
stands much chance vs the jr. super champs...

| b*e 发帖数: 3845 | 13 i usually don't hit with a lot of pace or side spin, fearing it may go wide.
It's 50% like a drop shot volley, i just take the pace off and hit a really
wide/cute angle. However, opponent who runs really fast may still have a
chance to reach it. I am talking about the guy who runs super fast and is
familiar with my game.

| b*********s 发帖数: 6757 | 14 I'm not sure I would call your shot a carve, my guess yours is more of soft
tap volley. Carve doesn't have much pace, but it does have the side spin and
the ball stays low.
If executed properly, I don't see anyone getting to it, maybe super talented
super fast jr., even then I don't think they'll enjoy getting those. Just
the other day, I had hit one of this, I didn't carve that well since it
landed just behind the service line, but it was close to the side line, my
friend who's a very fast guy and knows exactly where I was going with the
shot, barely got the racquet on, but had no chance making the ball over....

So back to my point: it's exactly what you said. The best choice
is always age/fitness dependent. Therefore it changes over the
years even for the same person. For slice, it's a long shot.
Mastering slice will always benefit you as you age. Maybe not
immediately, but eventually.

regularly vs a 63 year old guy, who give me fits every time we play... and
all he does is slice on both sides, he does drive on fh when given the
chance though... mid high floater, he'll drive it cc with short angle...
