According to the following guide it should be 25".
http://tennis.about.com/od/forjuniors/a/raclengthjr_2.htm
But most junior rackets of and shorter than 25" feel strange hitting regular
tennis balls. At 8 year old, depending on his height you can choose a good
and light 26" (some 26" rackets have significantly improved quality than 25"
) or even a super light adult racket.
My 6-year old son tried 21, 23, 25 and 26, none of them work better for him
than Dunlop Aerogel 4D Super-Lite (double handed forehand/backhand)
http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/Dunlop_Aerogel_4D_Super-Lite/de
This is by far the racket with the lightest swing weight under 27.5 inches,
and you can get 4-zero (4-even) size easily.

You 6-year old uses a racket that's longer than what most adults use? It
doesn't sound like a good idea but I could be learning something new.
Such a racket has the power to launch a ball into orbit, but it's not
important for a young kid to hit balls on the full court from day one.
Rather, they should learn to generate power to hit farther and farther as
they progress.

I spent quite a while looking into this.
1. All super lite adult rackets are longer than 27.5, mostly 27.67, like
head S5/S6.
2. 5/6-year old usually has no power, no matter how hard they try :). Trust
me, I started training him at 4 with all size rackets (including 19" I didn'
t list). So generating power is not the priority.
3. The most important thing for a kid to learn is hand-eye coordination,
footwork and form. hand-eye coordination has little to do with the choice of
racket (actually adult racket makes it a little bit harder), but footwork
and form have a lot of thing to do with it... I'll have to write a lot more
to describe this...
BTW, if a kid enrolls in a class (we did it too), most coaches will ask the
parents to buy a junior racket, because it's easy for kids to handle. On the
other hand many pros started using adult racket from young (say, 7 or 8),
but coached privately.

Please elaborate. I'd like to understand how wielding a racket that's as
long as one's waist height would help develop better eye-hand coordination.
With this reasoning, it should help an adult to learn by starting with a
racket that's 40+ inches long, no?

One is a junior racket and the other is a standard racket. Go with what the
coach recommends then. Supposedly he/she knows much better about your son
than us. All we know about your kid is that he's an 8-year-old boy.

It's still not too late to disclose a bit more information about your 少爷
if you really want to get some suable suggestions, LOL. Like his height %,
weight %, strong/weak build, athletic or not. Otherwise I suppose the
coach has met 少爷 and therefore at least knows much better by pure common sense. :)
BTW, your 少爷 is 8 now, please bring your signature line up to date.

Woman of few words. LOL.
As always, it's not a black-white case. If he has a 2H forehand or the 1H
forehand form is already decent, go with what the coach says. Otherwise ,
the 26-in babolat would be a slightly better fit in my opinion. I'd echo
what the coach said though, he'd probably be moving to a standard racket
before long anyway.

Like a468950 said, go with what the coach recommended. For private training
like tennis and piano, you really have to trust your coach. If not, try
another one with reputation.
Your friend of good tennis player doesn't necessary be a good coach, unless
he/she had already trained some young kids successfully. Coaching tennis is
a different profession from playing tennis.
But there are a few things better known:
1. Children's talents are perhaps more diverse than rackets. When my son was
in class, I saw some kids played very well with junior rackets. But for my
son, adult racket with double handed forehand works best. So as long as he
feels comfortable, either racket is OK at the beginning.
2. Seems you are rich :), then tell the coach don't hesitate at any time to
tell you when your son needs to change racket. Otherwise the coach may be
hesitate to tell you, simply because that seems saying he didn't choose the
correct racket at the beginning.
3. If you do choose racket length of 26 or 27, or above inches. It will be
very difficult for your son to learn serve now. Don't worry too much unless
you want him to be Federer. A guy who learned tennis at 8 told me he didn't
systematically learn serve until high school, but that didn't stop him from
serving 100mph eventually.
4. Go back to the racket, you probably need to choose a racket of 25 or very
lite longer racket if you son will learn single handed forehand. If he's
going to learn doublehanded forehand, you can probably choose any racket
lighter than 11oz since he's pretty strong.
5. For adult racket, do choose handle size 4-0 (or called 4-even).
Again, consult with your coach. A good coach can change the plan according
to the nature of your kid. So it's more important to see how the coaching
progresses than the simple starting point.

If you can find an adult with ever-growing body and strength, eventually
being able to handle 40+ inch racket to hit 120mph serve and 90mph winner (
assuming rule allows), then I would say yes.
The point is the goal.
Tennis is designed for adult, tennis ball is designed for adult racket, and
vise versa. For hundreds years adult racket has been optimized for ball
contact, so it's not a surprise you get the besting feeling using adult
racket. I tried several junior rackets of different lengths myself in
practice. Most of them under 25" really feel different in hitting the ball.
On the hand hand, when using those kids tennis ball (relatively lighter),
junior rakcet feels better than adult ones. It's about the match.
Again, for young kids, the priority is to learn good agility for tennis, as
long as a kid can handle a racket without difficulty. The good ball contact
of adult racket increases the fun for kids.

.
