十四行诗十二或十三世纪起源于意大利,但丁就曾经是杰出的十四行诗诗人。十六
世纪的时候十四行诗被引入英国,韵体有所改变,成为今天还经常见到的abab cdcd
efef gg 的形式。到莎士比亚开始写的时候,十四行诗在英国已经兴了好几十年,
正是流行的时候。虽然莎士比亚对英式十四行诗的成型并没有太多直接的贡献,但
是莎士比亚的名头实在太大,以至于英国文学史上的很多东西只要和莎士比亚有关,
基本上都会贴上他的标签。后世的人们如果只说Sonnet 或是the sonnets, 那么指
的就是莎士比亚的那154首十四行诗。Browning夫人,Milton, Rossetti, 这些十四
行诗的一流高手,全部只能靠边站了。同样英式十四行诗的另一个名称自然也是
Shakespearian sonnet。
莎士比亚的十四行诗出版于十七世纪初期,从流传下来的各种版本中已经考证出发行人
