WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama conceded Thursday that Vice President
Joe Biden forced his hand in endorsing same-sex marriage sooner than he
would have preferred.
Obama told ABC's "Good Morning America" that he was planning to announce his
support for gay marriage sometime before the Democratic convention in
September, but that things changed when Biden unexpectedly said Sunday that
he is "absolutely comfortable" with same-sex marriage.
"He probably got out a little bit over his skis," Obama said, "but out of
generosity of spirit."
"I had already made a decision that we were going to probably take this
position before the election, before the convention," he said.
Asked if he was upset with Biden for his comments, the president said he was
not.
"Would I have preferred to have done this in my own way, in my own terms,
without, I think, there being a lot of notice of everybody? Of course," he
said. "But all's well that ends well." |
