Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) joined the growing crowd of Democrats endorsing
gay marriage Tuesday, announcing his support on his Facebook page.
Montanans believe in the right to make a good life for their families.
How they define a family should be their business and their business alone.
I'm proud to support marriage equality because no one should be able to tell
a Montanan or any American who they can love and who they can marry. - JT

Mark Begich
Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) has released a statement fully endorsing same-
sex marriage.
Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) has said little publicly about his views on
marriage equality. Until now.
On Monday night, the senator released a statement to Buzzfeed fully
endorsing same-sex marriage:
"I believe that same sex couples should be able to marry and should have the
same rights, privileges and responsibilities as any other married couple,"
Begich stated.
"Government should keep out of individuals' personal lives -- if someone
wants to marry someone they love, they should be able to. Alaskans are fed
up with government intrusion into our private lives, our daily business, and
in the way we manage our resources and economy."

My feeling was that she did herself such a gross injustice by not having
sounded her support sooner. She had been so vocal about many equality issues
that I almost took it for granted that she already claimed same sex
marriage support long time ago!

Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) became the latest Democratic senator to endorse gay
marriage, announcing her switch Wednesday as the Supreme Court hears the
first oral arguments for the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage
Act.
"I know there are strong feelings on both sides, and I have a great deal of
respect for their opinions," Hagan told the News & Observer. "But after much
thought and prayer on my part this is where I am today."
"After conversations I’ve had with family members, with people I go to
church with and with North Carolinians from all walks of life, I’ve come to
my own personal conclusion that we should not tell people who they can love
, or who they can marry," she added. "It’s time to move forward with this
issue."

said Murkowski. "And an acceptance that what marriage should truly be about
is a lasting, loving, committed relationship with respect to the individual
… It may be that Alaska will come to revisit its position on gay marriage,
and as a policymaker I am certainly reviewing that very closely."

GOP Congressman, Does Not Support Gay Marriage Despite Having Gay Son
Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.) said Sunday that he did not support gay marriage
despite having a gay son, drawing a sharp contrast to another elected
Republican, Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, who came out for gay marriage after
his son came out to him.
"I don't support gay marriage," Salmon told Phoenix station KTVK in an
interview that aired Sunday. "My son and I have had a lot of dialogue about
it. I will say this: you know, my son is by far one of the most important
people in my life. I love him more than I can say."
Salmon said he didn't believe his son chose to be gay. A host then asked why
he should be denied the right to marry if he didn't choose to be gay.
"My view is while I don't believe we should be vitriolic and try to enact
harmful policies, by the same token, I'm just not there as far as believing
in my heart that we should change 2,000 years of social policy in favor of a
redefinition of the family," he responded.
"It just means that I haven't evolved to that station," he continued. "Rob
Portman apparently has. I haven't."
Another Arizona Mormon, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said Sunday that he
thought it was "inevitable" that a Republican presidential candidate would
back gay marriage.
The Phoenix New Times reported in 2010 that Salmon's son, also named Matt,
was in a relationship with and shared a home with Kent Flake, the senator's
second cousin.

Finally, Bob Casey Backs Gay Marriage
Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) announced his support for gay marriage Monday, at
last joining the growing number of Democrats to embrace marriage equality
over the last week.
"After much deliberation and after reviewing the legal, public policy and
civil-rights questions presented, I support marriage equality for same-sex
couples and believe that DOMA should be repealed," Casey said in an
exclusive statement to the Philadelphia Gay News.
"I began to focus on the issue of same-sex marriage much more intensely than
I had before,” he added, reflecting on the Supreme Court's consideration
of landmark gay marriage cases on California's Proposition 8 and the federal
Defense of Marriage Act.
Casey previously backed civil unions but stopped short of backing gay
marriage or even the repeal of DOMA. His office told The Huffington Post
twice last week the senator was "closely following the debate around DOMA."
A coalition of progressive groups in Pennsylvania intensified the pressure
on Casey by targeting his refusal to come around at a time when Democrats
from far more conservative states were flipping on the issue. The Huffington
Post reported on the groups' campaign, which advocates said stemmed from
the senator's appearance on numerous lists identifying the few Democratic
holdouts on gay marriage in the Senate.
Casey said the feedback from LGBT Pennsylvanians and their families gave him
the final push he needed.
"These stories had a substantial impact on my position on this issue," he
told PGN. "If two people of the same sex fall in love and want to marry, why
would our government stand in their way? At a time when many Americans
lament a lack of commitment in our society between married men and women,
why would we want less commitment and fewer strong marriages? If two people
of the same sex want to raise children, why would our government prevent
them from doing so, especially when so many children have only one parent or
none at all?"
Casey was comfortably reelected to a second six-year term in the 2012
election. Although gay marriage doesn't enjoy overwhelming support in
Pennsylvania, more residents are in favor of it (47 percent) than are
opposed (43 percent), according to recent polling.

Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) became the latest Democrat to publicly support
marriage equality, announcing the news on his Facebook page Tuesday morning.
"As our society has changed and evolved, so too has the public's opinion on
gay marriage – and so has mine. I pray every day for God to grant me the
wisdom to do what is right. Through my prayers and conversations with my
family and countless friends and Delawareans, I've been reminded of the
power of one of my core values: the Golden Rule. It calls on us to treat
others as we want to be treated. That means, to me, that all Americans
ultimately should be free to marry the people they love and intend to share
their lives with, regardless of their sexual orientation, and that's why
today, after a great deal of soul searching, I'm endorsing marriage equality

Another Senator Supports Marriage Equality: Bill Nelson of Florida
And then there were six: Today Bill Nelson of Florida became the latest
Democratic U.S. senator to support marriage equality, leaving only six
holdouts among Dems in that chamber.
Nelson gave a statement to the Tampa Bay Times editorial board saying, in
part, “If The Lord made homosexuals as well as heterosexuals, why should I
discriminate against their civil marriage? I shouldn’t, and I won’t. So I
will add my name to the petition of senators asking the Supreme Court to
declare the law that prohibits gay marriage unconstitutional.”
Nelson had previously backed civil unions as an alternative to same-sex
marriage, but he arrived his new position after discussions with
constituents, clergy, and others, his spokesman Dan McLaughlin told the
Times.
“People say, ‘Why now?’” McLaughlin said. “Well, it’s because [of] the
cases that went before the Supreme Court and the public debate that has
ensued. During this discourse, Senator Nelson has heard from a lot of
constituents. The way he goes about his job is to always treat people with
civility and respect and hear what they have to say.”
Nelson’s announcement follows those of two other Democratic senators, Bob
Casey of Pennsylvania and Tom Carper of Delaware, and one Republican, Mark
Kirk of Illinois, in support of marriage equality earlier this week.
Out of the 53 Democrats in the Senate, the six remaining who have not
publicly backed marriage equality are Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi
Heitkamp of North Dakota, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Mary Landrieu of
Louisiana, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, and Mark Pryor of Arkansas.
Two independents who caucus with the Democrats, Bernie Sanders of Vermont
and Angus King of Maine, both support marriage equality. Besides Kirk, the
only Republican senator to endorse equal marriage rights for same-sex
couples is Rob Portman of Ohio.

3 to Go: Another Senate Democrat Says He Favors Marriage Equality
Sen. Tim Johnson was one of the last remaining holdouts in the Senate among
Democrats on marriage equality but announced today that he's "evolved."
Johnson is retiring at the end of this term as South Dakota's senator, and
his son Brendan is considered a possible candidate to replace him in 2014.
"After lengthy consideration, my views have evolved sufficiently to support
marriage equality legislation," he said in a statement released today. "
This position doesn't require any religious denomination to alter any of its
tenets; it simply forbids government from discrimination regarding who can
marry whom."
South Dakota's other senator, Republican John Thune, remains opposed to
marriage equality.
This means there are now 54 votes — including two Republicans — in favor
of marriage equality in the Senate. Only three Democrats remain opposed —
Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Sen. Mary
Landrieu of Louisiana.
The latest answer from Landrieu, who is up for reelection next year, sends a
conflicting message about where she stands. While Landrieu said her
personal view is that "people should love who they love and marry who they
want to marry," she is committed to representing her state's view instead. "
My state has a very strong constitutional amendment not only against gay
marriage but against gay partnerships. So I'm looking at the people of
Louisiana trying to represent their interests," she told CNN on Friday.
Pryor is also up for reelection in 2014 in a state not considered favorable
for Democrats and said on Friday that he's now "undecided" on marriage
equality.
Manchin won reelection to full term last year but is best remembered as the
senator who shot a gun in a campaign ad to show voters how different he is
from your typical Democrat. "I believe that a marriage is a union between
one man and one woman," Manchin said in a statement to Talking Points Memo
on Tuesday. "My beliefs are guided by my faith, and I support the Defense of
Marriage Act."
