DANIELSVILLE - Melinda Horne knew how to shoot a gun before taking the
local sheriff's office's Firearms for Females class, but she wanted to
learn more.
Her family owned guns when she was growing up, but she found that men
typically have more chances to learn about guns than women, Horne said.
"We just don't seem to have as many opportunities to be around
firearms," she said.
More and more women are making the decision to buy a gun, and Madison
County deputies hosted their first firearm safety class Saturday catered
strictly to women.
The instructors tailored their information to fit what women need to
know about shooting - such as common posture mistakes - and Horne found
the class helpful.

Women who want to use guns to protect themselves must have the
confidence that practice gives in order to be mentally prepared when an
attacker comes at them, Thomas said.
"Hopefully, they never will be put in this situation, but if they are
they'll have the confidence," Thomas said.
Jo Rice is a home health nurse who doesn't always feel comfortable
traveling through some neighborhoods to get to her patients, she said.
"I've owned a gun for a long time now," she said.
But she decided to take the class because she hasn't practiced shooting
in a long while and wants to start again, Rice said. | f*********n
