. I think he is really mad at me now and starting to torture me.
However, he wouldn't allow me to do anything except working in the lab. If I
make connections with other professionals in order to build my career, or I
apply for attending an academic symposium, etc, he would be mad because he
would think that's a waste of time. Even if I go to the conference that he
allows me to go, he only allows me to stay 2-3 days the | x3

. It could be very serious. My phd boss is also very sensitive to this kind
of issue. He has kicked out several students just because of these things.
Boss is always a boss, he is responsible and needs to have full control over
all the academic related things in the group.
Try to communicate with him thoroughly in this issue. Otherwise, you will
have no academic future.

如果是投文章不告诉老板（挂他的名字更糟糕），那就是大事了。
开会花2-3天，从faculty角度来看很正常啊。有时候得上完课就直接开车去
机场，回来第二天一早就接着上课。Faculty对这种life一般都习惯了，如果
你觉得太stressful一定要让老板知道，否则他可能想不到。如果是想开会以
后再玩一下，多出的hotel stay得自己出钱（没法报帐的）。

For the last one, I didn't mean it's difficult for me to book tickets or
get around in a new place. But when you have extreme budget limit, you
have to pick the cheapest flight( whose time might be horrible) and find
cheapest transportation in the conference city (which might be very
uncomfortable). These all make me stressed. You can imagine that it's
already a little harder in a strange place than in your hometown, not to
mention if you skimp on fo

If he already allowed me to go to a conference, should I book the
tickets on my own decision or ask him about the dates? The problem is I
have to book the tickets early enough in order to get a low price, but
if I discuss the trip plan with him too early, he usually won't be
interested in thinking about that (he might say: wait a little bit). He
can book the last minute ticket for himself but I can't because of
limited budg

I have very limited budget because my boss, i.e.,the funding agents, never
gives me enough money for my research. I have to book cheap tickets, cheap
hotel, even share a room with my colleague. BTW, in order save money, I have
to do all the bookings myself. If I ask others for help, I have to pay
twice of the money.
My other boss, i.e., my students, makes me mad too as they won't allow me to
cancel two classes. So I have to take 6 am flight to make 9 o'clock cl | d***a

Don't discuss the trip plan in that way. Get an idea how long he wants you
to go, find a reasonable ticket, print out the itinerary and price, show
that to him, and ask if that's OK. The rule is to make things simple to your
boss. And find a price as low as you can but not to the point that you will
suffer.

complains are really nothing, compared to the pressure he has everyday. I
started understanding my advisor when I prepared for my faculty application.
