hours free time today before registration opens, so took a tour bus around
city, paid special attention to the cambridge area.
First time see the Charles River as real. The Memorial Drive along the river
is beautiful, but the river itself is small and short, the water is dark (
haven't seen so dark water for many years in U.S. and thought all U.S.
rivers were clean).
Wanted to visit the Harvard U., the sacred place of students around the
globes. So got off the tour bus, rode another bus to Harvard. The campus is
good, do like the many gates, each with a history on it. Spent relatively
long time in Harvard Bookstore. One surprising thing seen is that the books
displayed at conspicuous place at entrance is gardening and other books
found in B&N. I would think the University bookstores of China may not do it
. But getting deeper into the bookstore, it is felt that knowledge is deep
here, western philosophy, european arts and literature, etc. takes large
sections.
While wandering on the campus in Harvard, I was thinking: what my alma mater
looks like? It seems they all fall in a similar layout: a campus surrounded
by all kind commercial building and stores, with disparate openness thought
. Within the campus, you feel serene and calm, outside, it is chaotic,
constructions are going on here and there.
