This was my sixth year participating in PPD Beach to Battleship relay.
Naturally when you have been doing a thing over and over, there is certainly
some tiresome growing and you are less interested to talk about it. But in
this year, there were a few drastic moments worthwhile to memorize.
Race day, 8AM, I walked into medical tent at T1. Everyone inside was a
little surprised since it was too early to admit patient. They asked what I
need. I showed them my right foot with the cycling shoe – At the final
checkup, I found that my five years old cycling shoe suddenly acted up: The
strap bucket was detached from the shoe therefore I could not strap the shoe
tight to my foot. “Do you have something that can tie my shoe securely to
my foot?” Sure! – A medical stuff brought out a roll of bandage and
started to wrap it around from my foot’s arch to instep. “Please make it
very very very tight!” I asked. She had the bandage lapped ten times around
my foot in a very tight fashion. Then, she added several tapes to further
secure it. “Would it be too tight?” “Thank you! It’s perfect. I’d
rather you can solder the shoe to my foot at this point”. Afterwards, I
posted a photo with the bandaged shoe to FB saying “A small setback but
nothing will stop me”.
My swimmer is a world-class athlete. But even she described the water
condition as “choppy” – a lot of waves making the visibility low and hard
to breath. Her worst encountering was at the turning buoy: That place
became so crowded and she was kicked and slapped quite a few times when
trying to make a turn over there. (“You must have been wondering if you
signed up for MMA instead of swimming.” I later joked). With these ordeals,
she pulled out an excellent 22:50 swim time, which gave me a nice head
start.
Bike leg, mile 40ish, Black Berry Rd, after battering the wind at Market St,
I-140 and US421, I’ve already passed the majority of the riders. At that
point I was riding at no-man’s land: No leading bike in front, no visible
chasers at the back. I felt really tired and negativity suddenly seized me:
A lot of pain, self-doubt and lonesomeness. Right at that moment, suddenly a
motorcycle came from behind and started to follow me: My swimmer and her
husband rode out of town and found me! They paced and cheered up me for a
few minutes, telling me that I was almost in front of all the riders, that I
had kept a good pace, that I had rode in a fantastic form, and that they
believed I should get a good time. Feeling grateful and encouraged, I almost
could not control my tears – It was the BEST moment in my racing career
because by their words I felt like a hero, all the negativeness were gone
and even physical pains were eased quite a bit. Riding that psychological
momentum and the tail wind, I kept on pushing at the last 15 miles –
Picking up and maintaining a good speed that brought the overall average
speed from 23.1 to 23.2, 23,3, 23.4… all the way till 23.7 when I finished.
The bike leg logged 2:22:43. It is my personal record and is about 2.5
minutes faster than last year.
At T2 transition area, we encountered the biggest setback of the race: This
year the time chip handing off location was changed from outside at street
to inside the convention center. Not knowing this, I was stopped when I
entered and inside the building but my runner was waiting at the old
location outside. It was 6 minutes of biggest nerve-racking when I was stuck
inside and my runner was wondering what happened to me, till I decided to
run back to street, shout my runner’s name to get his attention. Eventually
he got the time chip and started running. This incident cost us about 4 to
5 minutes of precious time. But our runner’s heroic act at next saved the
day.
The temperature was not perfect for running. A bigger build, our runner was
more challenged under this type of weather. But he kept his pace high and
steady. Approaching finish line, when there was 1KM to go, another runner
caught up and passed him. Our runner took a glance at the passing runner’s
racing tattoo – 2146. That meant it was a relay team. Vowing not to let any
relay team won over us, our runner immediately started the battle. He
chased and out ran the opponent, only being counter attacked a few seconds
later. These two gentlemen kept on the fighting till the last ten meters to
the finish line. Finally, with the cheers at finish line, our runner out -
sprinted the opponent by one second. It was amazing that with the 70 miles’
and 4.5 hours’ long course, the winning was only decided by a mere one
second’s difference! Later we learned that the team we beat by one second
was the man’s relay first place. This means that my relay team, not only
proudly took the first place at mixed relay, but also the fastest relay team
across all categories.
Prior to the race, I had a prayer and it seemed that this prayer was
answered by him perfectly – We, by all accounts, did not get a smooth ride,
but we endured and prevailed through all these, and at the end, eventually
came out like a winner.

牛人!那要不是耽误这4,5分钟,岂不是赢太轻松。只有一点不明白,在那交棒不要订
好地点所以好经过各项的计时点?这种比赛有没有志愿者指导到那里交棒。
