我想象不出当初怎么会有那么多脑残到处宣传BIOINFORMATICS的‘光明前景’
造成一批人转到这个专业
comp. biology 相对而言还有很多应用，在基因序列解码，在寻找疾病的病变基因方面
但，你可以查查，华盛顿州有公司在招这方面的人

基本都是想毕业了找工作挣钱，所以学术都是做的一般基本和教职无缘的
公司真的招编程的，这些学生基本得重新自我培训一下
而真正生物系的学生，倒是做起分子实验像模像样，制药公司还愿意要。
所以这个专业的学生前途之惨淡比起正规分子生物学的博士硕士要差
就别指望相比正规计算机系的、物理系的、应用数学、生物统计系。。。

我认识的学这个专业的不少，做faculty的有一些，当码工矿工的也有，
收入个十万养家糊口，真不是难事。
。。

I have 4-6 years of experience of Perl, Python, Matlab, C/C++.

Actually, i have a concrete background in NGS sequencing analysis.
I am comfortable of developing various small analytically tools (< 2000
lines) and pipelines for bioinformatics analysis using Perl and C/C++.
However, my coding skill is not as high as pure software engineers...
。。

我认识的生信毕业的，还没见到毕业找不到工作的，就是做posdoc，工资也比wet高不
少。
楼主应该把自己简历在看看，找人改改。
把面试的时候问的问题贴出来，大家看看你回答的有没有问题。

bioinfo是个很窄的领域，不想cs，什么地方都用的到，最好不要限制地方 |

也有进了第二第三轮电面，但是是contract position，我也没继续了
或者因为不想去某个地方，或者工资不高等等。
看来还是太挑了。。。我还是广撒网吧。

looking for a bioinformatics staff. Among ~80 applicants, I looked through ~
30, based on their 1st round of selection.
The most surprise I had was that the majority of applications did not have a
cover letter. One is basically out with a cover letter, because the
advertisement was written very specifically. Majority of the CVs were also
not up to professional standard.
Skill set is important to get into the short list. Beyond that, I looked for
cues of motivation and creativity when I examined the CVs. I value the
quality of the person more than his experience. Several people had great
skill sets and good publications, but nothing stands out to indicate a trait
of potential. Often, it is easy to tell how one can publish many papers
without solving a single real problem.
In the end, I made recommendations only to 2 people for interview. One of
them did not have a good match of skills, but may have the best potential of
all (audacity for new research fields; triathlon athlete). |

the best in the world. It may be way worse than a similar position in a
government contractor.
Communicating to a bench scientist is a very demanding skill that many don't
have. Besides, many positions don't have enough reward for demanding such
skills.
