域某大而全的会议(就是基本大家每次都会投都会去的那种)始终没有邀请我加入他们的
TPC。我主动和会议的steering committee联系好些次人家也不理我，这是怎么回事？
从n年前起我在该会也发了好些paper了，按理说我的资历应该早就够了，可人家就是不
接受我做TPC member。与此鲜明对比的是领域内很多fresh PhD只发了两三篇paper的毕
业第一年刚做faculty（很多很一般的学校的）就被邀请为该会的 TPC member.成为该
会TPC member主要是代表了在这个领域的一种status, 因为基本上这个领域还算凑合的
faculty都在TPC里面。不是这个会议的TPC member别人会认为缺乏领域内的
visibility。
另外还有个奇怪的现象就是我一直收到很多很多的申稿(reviewer)邀请，每年各
transactions加各种会议的至少50，60往上，但是极少极少有会议（一般每年不超过1

找茬了
2. 招的人太多，不是每个人都能survive了；这时候和老板，或者老板老板关系好的人
，能有visibility，而且能抢到visibility 高的事情。。。

无但是就两三千很少，平时出差比较多，去中国也很多机会，出差补贴一年能拿4-6K,
但是多少也不确定的。 工作了三年半，小公司，一百多人，H1B第三年，今年八月过期
，公司绿卡在办，律师太慢，一年半了，刚刚交上PREVAILING WAGE还在等消息。。
新工作： 88K base，（估计还能谈到96K左右争取） cash bonus 10%，会办绿卡，但
是title 变了，新的title跟我的学位上的并不一样，不知道会不会有麻烦。

我的本本是今年二月买的，买到的时候就有很多小问题，不过我懒，无视了。
最近屏幕上出现米粒大的小灰点，送到lenovo（说起来，这个小灰点有点奇怪，如果背景有颜色，其实是可以透过这个小灰点看到背景的颜色的，感觉，就好像屏幕上沾了灰似的，当然我很确定地擦过了，不是真的沾了灰。如果是真的dead pixel的话，应该只是一个死气沉沉的小灰点，不可能还能透过点点看得到别的颜色吧？）。
几天后， lenovo打电话来,说那个dead pixel是caused by physical damage，修的话要近一千块。
我说我没有physical damage啊？她轻描淡写地来一句“well, that's hard to prove。”我就噎住了，lol。然后我和她说，要她问一下具体的花费（还有别的一些刚买来就存在的小问题，我也想确认一下花费）。她说她改天打给我（那时是上周五）。
后来我在网上搜了一下，发现我的电脑这个型号的屏幕很多都有这个dead pixel的问题。

该有不错的机会。我就提出能不能现在给我升职，他说要和上司去谈，不过他认为我有
good chance.
今天他反馈给我，说他的上司意见，要过一年再给我升，理由是我的visibility不够，
要让其他组的人都看到我的贡献才容易升职。老板安慰我说，他已经尽力争取了，以后
会给我创造些机会让其他组的人看到我的贡献，而且半年后他会再帮我争取。
不只如此，老板的上司在斟酌bonus的时候，还要求老板把我的rating改成平均分３分
，老板最后改成了４分。
还是非常失望，自己觉得表现不错，感觉得不到认可，这种感觉很糟糕。大老板和我打
交道很少，我问了老板，说大老板除了visibility这一点，对我还有没有别的意见。老
板说大老板没有说别的，不过他建议我set up一个meeting, 把他和大老板都叫上，讨
论一下how to improve for promotion。
我想问问大家，这样的meeting是否合适？虽然说应该适度的push，我不知道这样会不

我的直觉是，其实小老板并没有强烈推荐我，这和你说的完全一致。在和小老板单独的
会议上，他把责任全部推给大老板，但是在这个三人会议上，就看出他的真实态度了，
他是真的想等一年再给我升职。
会议上，我们讨论了怎样improve visibility的问题，大家同意其实很多都是看
manager给你分配什么样的任务，创造什么样的机会。如果工作没有交集，实在是很难
跟其他manager混个脸熟的。 小老板认为我目前正着手做的一个项目就是提高
visibility的好机会，我也就顺水推舟要求他给我创造更多机会，给我布置更
challenging的工作等等。
会后有些沮丧，这是第一份工作，当时接受offer时没有经验，起始工资低了，现在工
作３年了，工资比期望值至少低了一万，很有些得不到认可的感觉。想跳槽吧，又觉得
现在的project很有价值，能学到不少东西，怕自己为了钱跳槽，将来的工作机会未必
如意，真是纠结啊。

我的情况是已经有绿卡了。这个公司比较好的地方是一进公司就给我办了EB1B，我的研
究水平一般，自己办也就是个NIW也不一定行的水平，所以这一点我是感谢公司没有拿
身份问题刁难我的。
这些天考虑了一下自己的情况，也决定等一年再说。第一是有比较好的project在手，
很想多学一点；第二是家有小小孩，也没多余的精力拼事业（晚上和weekend我是从不
加班的）；第三点是老板后来通知我，允许一半时间work from home.他认为这是一个
favor,因为我们组只有一个这样的名额，但人人都希望work from home。我觉得他有补
偿的意思，虽然我不是太在乎这个，不过多和孩子相处也是好的。
关于social visibility的问题，我觉得语言的问题倒不大，问题是我的性格不是自来
熟的那种，而且和一帮白人男性实在是没有什么共同语言，和他们同桌吃饭，基本插不
上什么话。跟女性倒是比较好打交道，但是公司的女性实在太少了，manager更少。这
样一来，靠的只有是technical visibility了。 |

老是跟CXO, President什么打交道的话, 压力挺大的. 工作总有做不好, 来不及的时候
, visibility太高了也不好. 特别有的项目, CXO们自己的压力也很大, 比如要向board
交代, 或者大客户急着要. 所以高官一般要给高工资, 补偿精神压力. 级别低的人
visibility太高有点得不偿失. |

小网站公司 一年新人 整个公司就我一个外国人 专业基础比较一般 公司搞技术开发的
一共也就七八个
一年前刚进来的时候老板就直接让从技术支持和维护开始 ui有需求给做一下 逻辑有了
bug给改改 数据有了错给更正一下 反正就是修修补补的事儿 比较大的项目基本没做过
因为公司小 就这么一个产品 之前的两三个老员工一直在负责新的开发 但其实任务也
不是很多 基本是在原有的基础上增加
跟我一起来的还有个刚本科毕业的小孩A 美国人 比较能说 能秀 能让老板看到credit
这个跟他刚进来时候干的活也有关 专门负责生成各种report给老板用 所以接触机会比
较多 后来我俩差不多一直在干同样的支持维护的活 他也一直负责做report给老板和其
他需要的人用 所以大家总是找他帮忙什么的 他的visibility比较高 其他的支持维护
的业务水平我比他强点 效率也比他高 我性格算是开朗的 英语也不算差 但是真的刚开

visibility多了如果自己犯错，impact也会被迅速放大，所以如果自己实力还不够，不
太建议你没事老去骚扰director，他们的经验和vision都和你很不一样，你要明白自己
的话就是自己的三tatement，留下坏印象的话更不好
但你老板说的多和比你高一层的领导聊聊是没错的，另外似乎你是女生，就相对就更不
怕说错/问错了，多花点时间聊聊生活/工作/旅游。 |

我们这里一个老美姑娘， research associate， 轮到她在组会上作 presentation 的
那天大老板不在。 她就把自己的 PPT slides 电邮给大老板， 跟大老板约时间单独给
他讲一遍 slides. 结果被大老板公开表扬。
埋头干好工作， 等着被自己的老板 reward 的想法很消极被动。 即使自
己的老板人很好， performance calibration 的时候也可能有大老板甚至其他组的老
板提出你的 visibility 不够， 对整个部门的 impact 不够. 自己的老板小气或者要
求特别高的更不用说了， 都没有旁人帮你说话， 因为他们不了解你啊。 一定要让尽
可能多的人知道你的存在， 你做什么， 你参与过哪些项目， 这样才能尽量避免被一
个人罩死。 很多老中， 包括我自己，不好意思找人说话， 特别是级别比自己高的人
， 以为人家忙没兴趣听。 其实人家觉得是老中不喜欢交流，不搭理人。 |

PROMOTION和VISIBILITY。 他作为PHD， 应该
有更多的学术道德。 他被你抓住把柄，

我是觉得我有把握做的，就出头。出头了不一定有visibility,不出头永远没有
