school for the tier-1 univ is even better, about 60 something.
the first univ indeed does not require teach for all 6 years until tenure
happens.
yes, location and environment are really important, and I of course like the
second one. but i just cannot resist more money.

salary last year plus some salary from teaching a 2-week summer course in a
summer school, but the salary from the course had to be put into a personal
research account because my univ does not allow anyone to go beyond the 3-month limit. if your univ allows 14 months, it has nothing to do with any senior prof or anyone else and i don't see the need for them to 翻眼睛. the senior profs in my dept was happy for me, not 翻ing |

univ. because most (almost all) of the students are white and not used to
foreign even any other accent. Also your culture background is so different

Background: My department used to hire many Chinese students from my Univ@
China, however, many of them jump or change to EE/CS after arrival, even
though the department is a top-ranked program.
My adviser hired me because my gf was in the same school (but completely
different discipline) and she submitted the material in person (when I was
in China). I was the only person hired in the next a few years from my Univ
@China.

好了，现在学校决定sponsor你的绿卡，I-140上总要有所表现吧，总要有人签字吧。于
是这些龟毛规定就出来了，什么你不用我们的律师我们拒绝给你签字，之类之类。ISSO
的人有本事就把你的140拦下来，可是他们没有做到。有人出面签了，而且是这个学校
有头有脸的一个人，足以代表学校意愿的一个人。

留给那里的网友补充，先来讲讲这个滑铁卢吧。要说此校的名气
在中国还是稍微有一点的。可能因为一是他的名字是皇帝摔倒的
地方，容易吸引眼球。第二是计算机圈子里还多少有人知道他
是CS"top"名校（虽然实际仅仅限于本科）。
Univ. of Waterloo是1957年建立的。因为历史短，资金有限。
所以办学强调本科教育。应该说此校在本科教育是成功的，特别
是在计算机，数学，和工程方面。不过，该校一直安于这种定位
（事实上可能即使不安于也力量不足，因为加拿大的研究经费
主要给有医学院的大学，UofToronto, UBC, McGill, Univ. of
Alberta都是这类，Waterloo没有医学院），所以在提高科研和
研究生培养上没有太大作为。而且在本科生和研究生的考虑发生
冲突时候，会毫不犹豫的给前者优先。从我来以后几年，Univ. of
Waterloo一直把离开学校比较近，购物比较方便的Graduate Student
Apartment蚕食，改建成本科宿舍。去年终于大功告成，把研究生

no, Prof Hou has been working at Hunan Railway tech college for over 30
years, the school was merged with Zhong Nan Univ, same as Hunan
medicine college, now Zhong Nan Univ became #1 in Hunan replacing
Hu Da before the 3 schools merge.
this year, there was a 22 yo kid who solved a world famous math
puzzle from Zhong Nan univ., was promoted as professor in Math,
he is also a PhD student of Prof Hou. |

我外甥的情况：
是我大姐的孩子，读高中。他打算学习金融或生命科学。因为我在NIH，所以家里打算
让他来GEORGETOWN UNIV 或 JOHN HOPKINS。我知道这边有那种 ESL PROGRAM，但是不
知道进去了对申请那个大学有帮助么？（GEORGETOWN UNIV 和 UNIV OF MARYLAND 有这
样的ELS PROGRAM）要是没有帮助，读这个PROGRAM的意义可能也不大。
或则他可以在这边上高中吗？就读个一年然后申请大学。
