讨论半天竟然都不在正题上。人家说的是豁免的学费tuition waiver 以后要taxable。
如果自己交的tuition 不但不用交税,父母还可以拿来减税的。TA/RA啥的一直是要报
税的,交不交得看豁免权以及上限。
如果一个学生真正优秀到能豁免藤校4万的学费,这4万学费扣除24000的deductible 就
是16000,假设其他的钱都不能扣除了,12%的税就是1920刀。是免学费交税合算,还是
交学费免税合算啊?
第二个,州立学校的学费都低于24000这个坎,所以学费等于还是免税的不是。

if you look at these, in a bad economy, everything else goes down except
tuition, which goes up a bit. the university is unlikely to collapse, but it

This 联合培养学生 doesn't pay tuition. They assume the student will receive
"half-scholarship" (i.e., tuition waiver or from other sources), and only

Penn State 的budget有3部分组成:state appropriate, student tuition, and
others (donation/research grants/industry grants etc). 其中state appropriate

well, i would say you can't neglect teaching.
many profs love this professions because of teaching.
to me, teaching is the beauty of the job, while research is the tough side
of it.
one very famous scientist once said: i can not imagine working in a place
where there is no teaching requirement; i would be mad in that environment.
honestly teaching is the best way to keep us sane and the best way to
support research financially.
in an ideal environment, there shouldn't be any funding agencies.

在一个排名很低的学校干了三年,学校是在大城市,但消费可以接受,不算太高。目前
除了学校排名,其他还不错。目前情况来看,拿tenure压力不大。
今年上了一下市场,拿了另外一个大城市的公立学校offer,到手工资差不多,但消费
要高很多,尤其是房价,当然这个不是我主要考虑,毕竟消费高也带来了生活其他方面
的一些方便和好处。学校排名比我现在学校强很多,是大家眼里正经大学了,而非我现
在呆的“野路子”民科大学。
但有点纠结。
1. 如果跳走的话,tenure clock要重新计算,而且新的地方tenure要求会高很多,虽
然对自己有信心,但重新敖一边tenure track还是挺苦逼的
2. ld的学业要重新开始,而且新的大学没有spouse tuition的减免。当然,跳槽的话
,给了一些summer salary,就当是补偿tuition。
总的来说,就是对于两人来说,都有重头再来。。好处也显而易见,事业上讲,10年之
后在新学校的发展情况以很大概率要比现在好很多。总之,就是短痛和长远期待之间的
纠结。
是现在就从了新地方然后就慢慢干,还是说留在现在学校继续积累一下,然后再伺机而

拿到一个小NSF grant,collaborative, 预算削减之后我的部分只能每年support一个
学生5个月工资+Fringe Benefit (no tuition) + 0.5个月summary salary. 第一个
funding,没有经验,不知道NSF fund是不是可以稍微灵活一下使用,还是必须严格按
照当时提交的budget justification保持一致。
当时提交的Budget justification上写的是support一个学生5 calendar month +
fringe。按照现在的budget,我想其实可以summer support 2个学生3个月(没有fringe
和tuition),这样用对我更合理。但是不知道这样可不可以?是不是违规了?Budget总
额一样,但是不是support一个学生,而是support 2个学生summer research。 提交
budget revision的时候,按照削减的budget总额调整了学生的month number,当时没
有多想。

U Chicago only pays 75% of your kids' tuition. Emory depends on how long you
serve, could be 25%-100%. WUSTL pays 100% tuition if your kids go to WUSTL
, after 7 yrs of your service. Northwestern: 50% after 5 years of service.

不管怎么算 tuition 还是stipend,比如把本来就免掉的学费设成0,
从学校的角度讲,都必须保证能继续从 federal grants 中分到羹。
如果学费设成0了,
那么学校就没法把 tuition remission 作为 direct cost,
从而在 grant 中拿钱了。

You probably do not deserve the family that you have now. Everything you put
out here is for yourself, but you try to use the family as an excuse. $70-
80k is plenty for a family of 4 if you are not looking for an extravagant
life style. The tuition for Yale is not low, but if you are still making $

2. In general, both private school and public school (depends city and town)
can issue I-20;
3. Student can study at public school and he/she will have to pay full
tuition fee.
4. Middle school or High school doesn't need SAT or PSAT.

干脆直接说好每年给他弟弟和他家人多少钱,除非生病要s了,否则绝对不从这个里面
出。
然后你自己也多为自己孩子考虑考虑,要在FL或者是VA等有pre paid tuition plan的
州,先给每人买一个529 plan(一个人5w美元左右,可以当场付清,或者是分5年或者
18年付)。如果没有的话,每个月给每个小孩存上个200块的prepaid tuition。
实在不行买个Disney time share出去玩,自己再上几个LV以上层次的包......

for home loan, car loan and day care. Our house is only $300k, $100k in our
city is considered as medium high level.
I do ebiz hard only for his tuition purpose. Otherwise, I have to get him
student loan to pay for tuition. Student loan has at least 7% APR from our
bank.

1. U of Mass, Amherst, 12-month stipend, M.S. tuition are all waived.
A professor there said usually in the third semester(Sep--Dec) only half
stipend be payed.
2. U of Virginia, 9-month stipend, M.S or PhD(I can choose it after
arrival). tuition are all waived.
The RA often continue for the next year.

Research assistantship: which normally covers your tuition and living expense.
Teaching assistantshop: similar to RA.

I got the undergraduate admissions from University of Tennessee - Knoxville,
University of Kansas and Drake University. The tuitions are:
UT Knoxville U of Kansas Drake
$29,000 $24,000 $34,000
Drake Univeristy offered $15,000 scholarship so that the tuition will be
only $19,000 per year. I'm not sure which one I should choose, Drake is the
cheapest one for me, but University of Kansas might have better reputation.

Prices are rising quickly and the bay area is very expensive. How much do
bay area universities give students as stipend (tuitions excluded), like

students can get less than 20k as stipend (excluding tuition).

If by 金融研究生 you mean MBA (with a finance concentration), s/he will need
some work experience. If you mean PhD in finance, s/he doesn't need work
experience but s/he needs to be very competitive to get in a good program,
and s/he had better be very good in math.
MBAs offer very few scholarships. You may try to get some tuition waiver in
some schools. Usually people apply for loans to pay for tuition. If s/he
gets in a good MBA program, it's not that hard to get loans, because banks
know you'll be

year.
I don't pay health insurance, so I have no idea.
The only things increase are the tuition , up 5% and rent up 5%
