请问怎样区分teaching school和community college呢?,才开始找teaching school的
工作,可是听人说community college很差,可是看了很多学校,也不知道哪种就是
teaching school,哪种是community college..

safe to have above 3.5 but I also heard a much higher threshold from some
other faculty. Some of my colleague do not even trust the teaching eval
since there are millions of ways of pleasing students without teaching
them real stuff. So I often invited my colleague to my class to observe
and evaluate my teaching.
But I believe that being in a research university means that eventually it
is research that matters a lot more |

teaching is alright. it is not that hard to get tenure as long as you can
publish.
yes, for GC, ins has "special handling" for college faculty.
4- 5 w for 9 months is not uncommon in the mid-west or the south. it would
be a lousy pay in CA. if you teach in summer, you get extra pay. since
summer is about 13 weeks, if you teach one or two courses, you still have
over a month to go to China or to cruise the Caribbean.you also get 3-4
weeks of for Chri |

promote 涨12.5%，teaching load 3-3,每代学生回一次国，可以reduce 一门课。其他
情况我就不太清楚了。
一点信息仅供参考。
没有考虑过去大学工作，一方面tenure-track职位辛苦，自己对搞research没什么自信
；另一方面觉着自己教不了学生。所以没有往那方面努力，现在也来不及了。
类的），这两年写论文，很多技术细节忘了，但复习一段应该能拣起来。但想着phd毕
业，30多快40，还得从developer做起（尤其是为面试复习着那些最基本的数据结构、
算法）有点犹豫。
能类似consulting，是个可以努力的方向。但感觉没什么太多直接的经验，不知能不能
找到合适的职位。
多要求，喜欢教书和别人好相处就行。我这几年断断续续做TA，也帮老师教过课，英语
不是那种特好的，但也还算可以（咳，在美国待长了），好好准备后讲课应该没问题。
但又想着，如果这种小college，是不是还不如找个大点的学校看有没有tenure-track

I think that many people are biased against teaching colleges. Good teaching
and good research are not mutually exclusive. You can be superior in both,

This is very misleading. A liberal art college usually doesn't have a
professional school (B-school, engineering school, Medical school, Law
school et al), but it doesn't mean they are different from any research or
teaching schools. In deep of higher education, liberal art education is the
essential part.
There is no absolute difference between research school and teaching school
either, and if there is any, it just means whether it is more of teaching-
oriented or research-oriented. |

not confident about me going there, hehe). I told them I want a combination

可是上星期我有2个oncampus interviews，一个是离家不远的teaching university，
一个学期教3门课；另一个是离家很远的research university，但不是很强的。两个学
校都还在interview中，估计要到下下个星期初作决定。
但说句实话，全都不理想，不管是哪个，都只是个跳板，将来还是想跳到好的research
university里去。 但是目前怎么办？
听说这个so-so的research institute进去了，很难跳到其他research institute里去
，因为工作就是成天写reports，很忙，没机会发peer-reviewed journal articles.
可是，离家近的那个teaching university不怎么样，没名气，很担心如果进去了，想
跳到好的大学，会不会非常难？
请大家给意见：最终还是想进好的research university，现在该选哪个？

发帖数: 121 | 27 是阿， 最近比较纠结， 老婆的论点是： 好不容易读了个屁挨着个地， 家庭收入总该
是往上走， 总不至于往下走吧？ 想想也有理。
另外一个不去的原因， 也是因为自己对teaching还是没底， 不知道真的天天teaching
是不是受的了， 反正是听说进了teaching这一行， 再出来做research 或则工业界就
不容易了。
以后再找估计待遇也就这样了， 好的地区收入可能会更差， 差的地区老婆孩子一样不
愿意去。
好像除了research学校可能没其他更好的选择了。至少收入会高一点。有research的学
校一般地段也比较好一点。 是不是？ |

我的课enrollment是全系最高的，全都注满了，每次课后， office hours人都是满满
的，当然大多数都是来讨论课上他们没懂的问题。
对于第一年的annual review我一点都不担心。chair虽然指出我teaching不足，但他一
直再说我是他见到的第一年里performance最好的ap,还经常在系里开玩笑说我是系里的star。
我就不多说，免得有人觉得我BSO。 我发帖子只是想和大家探讨一下teaching，因为以
前身边都是top school, top program的老师和学生。而且以前学校真的是大家都在拼命的比拼
publication。有一年招新人，系主任把我们几个graduate student叫去，问我们对candidate
的看法。我们正对几个candidate的教学能力讨论得热火曹天呢，系主任直接就cut off topic, 说
we don't care about teaching，当时就把我们雷晕了。
现在到这个学校确实有个过渡。我的态度和教学方法确实需要调整！ |

做research,因为在institute,没有teaching load,所以不会教书，不知道怎么教书。

，念在我去工业界不一定能成，publication record还成，还想赖在学术界，不管是以

研究足够强，低于平均的teaching不是什么大问题。但如果
在可上可不上的，就看关系了。系里强力推荐保荐，院里和学
校可能会放，但如果系里不坚定，这个可能会被用来挑刺。
如果teaching有问题的话，你的中期考核应该会提到。如果
中期考核没提你有问题，但最后因为这个tenure受影响，你
是有法律程序可走的。 |

如果是research school，虽然主要看publication，但是还是会在意teaching
experience的吧？而且如果publication又不是特别的impressive的话。。。如果是
teaching school，是不是基本就没戏了。。。

onsite interview的时候问到start up，dean说一般是几千刀，很少有例外上万的。
想请教一下版上熟悉情况的faculty，通常teaching school的start up就这么少吗？还
是可以试试再多要一些？

Teaching load: 4/4 , i.e., winter 4, Fall 4, summer/spring depend on
enrollments. In fall, the first semester my teaching load is 3, that .25
release is for developing scholarship plan.
Salary: 62000/8month
Area: mid-west university town, 30 minutes away from major metro area.

邮件上说这个teaching seminar 主要就是要把statement of teaching philosophy 做
成PPT，让学生和老师了解你会怎么教课和指导学生做研究。还要求尽快提供title和
abstract.
从来没有这方面的经验，希望各位多多指点。尤其是title和abstract怎么写，因为要
尽快发过去了。

video,当然会优先考虑。teaching school 考虑的就是你是否一上来就能教我们的学生

绿卡拿到了，想动动。主要是换个地方，也希望工作轻松点。
最近投了个teaching school（主要面向在职学生的那种）的职位，给了teaching demo
的机会。因为是异地，人家说大老远的，就不用去了，用skype。我主动说我去，自己
掏腰包，人家居然婉拒了。
skype做teaching demo,实在没经验，要注意些什么呢？Computer Networking方面，讲
点什么topic好？时间20分钟。求建议。
另外，这种学校晚上和周末有时也要上课，会不会很忙？压力大不大？ |
