发帖数: 258 | 1 拿到tenure letter 之后在这里报了一下，受到大家都鼓励，一并谢过。现在想再罗嗦
几句干的东西，希望对后来者有点用处。
首先声明我是文科，teaching school。对此不感冒的同事可以跳过了。我还是很喜欢
teaching school，尤其是这些特点：
1. Tenure 相对容易。至少我觉得吧。尤其小学校更是如此。
2. 教书为主，research 要求低。适合喜欢教书的朋友。
3. 工作时间相对不长。尤其是我们文科，不要做实验什么的。
4. 与人打交道多。我就是喜欢和人交流，而不是对着电脑写paper.
5. 同事间相处融洽，小学习更是如此。因为多数同事也都和我一样，好说好玩好动
。
6. 更深入了解这个社会的方方面面。这个可能是文科的一些特点。我常用一些热点
的文化问题让学生课上讨论。
要在Teaching school 混好首先就是必须教书教得好。我们这里基本上是一票否决，教
书不好就呆不下去。这个相对来说是国人的弱点。我是文科，从博士起，语言运用的较

My only teaching experience was Teaching Assistants. When I wrote my
teaching statement, I stated what I will implement in my future teaching,
what I value the most in my classroom, instead of saying what I have done
in the past (coz I didnt have indepedent teaching before).

teaching school的AP呢，介于两者之间？5-7w？

我还是继续投research school吧。
想问一下，一个学校告诉我的是3-3的teaching load,他们还提到了有可能在夏天教一
门课。也有research requirement；
另一个学校说的是，tenure 之前是3-3的课程，需要做research. tenure之后如果不想
做research, 就必须是4-4的teaching load.
这两个学校都是teaching school, 对吗？他们的teaching load 重吗？谢谢啦 |

我下周要去面一个学校 要求15分钟的teaching demo 45分的research presentation.
engineering department只是一个系里的一个小项目 连MS都没有
但是如果是 teaching school 要我这种只做过grading的TA去 肯定不是因为我

这句话好像有歧义，第二部分可以有三种理解：
1) statement of research goals + statement of teaching goals
2) statement of research + statement of teaching goals
3) statement of research + teaching goals
请问哪一种最合理？还有，对于这则广告，research和teaching是应该写在一个文件里

光写 Interest 的话,只有短短的一段话而已,似乎不大好.我能否在我的 Teaching

我也拿过school and college的teaching award，还在我们学校的teaching academy里
面，所以看过不少统计数据。
Teaching evaluation 这个不同专业差别很大，商学院和艺术学院一般都高，理科平均
要低不少。所以tenure的时候评价teaching，主要是同专业里面比较。
class size 是非常重要的因素，显著的负相关；老师的 teaching experience 是另一
个因素，interestingly, it's inverted-U shape。 |

会在T&P的时候讲明我已经达到了teaching要求（生孩子而降低的teaching load要求）
，不会讲具体原因。我问系主任，faculty投票时候会不会发现我少教了一些课进而刁
难我，系主任说“你都达到teaching要求了”，但他也表示他不能保证其他faculty内
心会如何考量。
请问，各位faculty会如何看待达到teaching“要求”但却是比正常课程load要少一些
的情况呢？投票时候会以此作为一个攻击点吗？虽然明面上不会（规定也不能），但内
心会不会抬高其他方面的bar呢？多谢！ |

无teaching经历，没办法，系里TA名额都给大牛老板的学生了

公司投了n多，但我们生物工程类公司很不景气，都把我拒了
因为不想做科研，所以不想博后，更不想去研究类大学做ap
看来看去，只有去teaching school了
我口语应该说挺好
但是投了10+ teaching school，连个面试都没有
并且我可能今年夏天毕业，应该赶不上10 fall这一拨了

现在的opening啊，少啊真是少，都10月份了，LD所在的大城市还只有1个学校有
opening跟我的专业有点瓜葛。此学校我是闻所未闻啊，但查了下wiki,居然是某州最大的私立学校，kaka,我真是骨肉寡闻啊。此学校今年新开一个college,招个会教书的，念在我去工业界不一定能成，publication record还成，还想赖在学术界，不管是以做research为主，还是teaching为主的，我想试一下教书匠的活。
今天午饭时间问了下老板，老板说可以试一下，我诚实地说，我连TA都没有做过，能成吗？老板说了一句，啊？那可能是个problem啊。上周末我脚筋脑汁写个teaching statement,因为没有教学经验，英语也是结结巴巴， 还有要教的课程不完全是我的专业，我写了一天，只挤牙膏似的挤出了几行字，惨啊

不来。其次也要看此人的publication potential, 因为teaching school 并不是只以
教书论英雄。publication 也得有。
我们学校去年一个reject tenure 的就是publication 太少 。 |

一个偏teaching的学校，location等方面对我来说比较满意，不想离老公太远，所以很
想拿下。说给talk可以“about your research，or teaching areas，or both“。本
人research还是很productive（比较起他们现有的faculty），teaching也算比较有经
验，很不sure该怎么准备这个talk。列了个提纲，打算都讲，可是问了下advisor，他
说我应该只讲research，focus on dissertation（他一直希望我去research school，
不希望我到这个学校），又问了一个师姐，说应该主讲teaching，现在我完全没有了主
意。可以拿这个提纲问search committee chair的意见吗？

Research school很不看重这个，因为大家都没有真正的教课经验，都是去了再慢慢摸
索，所以，以写teaching philosophy为主。可能数学除外，好像数学系学生常常直接

university, and here is what he told me about how to find such positions:
I don't really know of a list of schools that focused on teaching rather
than research. What I did during my job search is just look at the school
and the dept. If it was a big state school, Purdue, IU, OSU, etc I

2＋2 teaching load。大概2 preps。说前几年有teaching reduction不要做service。
鼓励发A journal，但是也不是强求。有的话，会给开一瓶香槟。大概3，4篇B journal
就OK了。学校给予很多的科研支持，希望学院可以有个提升in publication。还会给
summer support，但是不多。

第一年3/3的teaching load, 2 preps，教大三和大四的本科生
从第二年开始，如果前一年没有publication，teaching load就变成4/3。而且系主任
不能保证我能教以前的preps。没有TA/GA支持
请问，这样的teaching load是不是很重了啊？算是正常的load吗？平时还会有时间做

teaching经验很多，有teaching grant （小）
哎，其实我真的对自己还是蛮有信心的（没别的，就是相信自己是一定能找到工作的。
。捂脸），认识的很多人也觉得我很适合做老师，teaching school算是我比较想去的
地方了（没法子，好像不是很热爱科研。。。）
申请teaching school是不是local的申请者占便宜很多啊？screening时到底最看重什
么呢？我该强调什么东西最吸引人家呢？大言不惭厚着脸皮说总觉得过不了screening
这一关对我来说很亏，后面的根本没有办法展示。。。最近看的opening都是在其他州
（当然也不太远），总觉得本州的那些学校毕业的申请者因为千丝万缕的联系要近水楼
台很多呢。。。当然，我晓得只能控制我自己，这些外在因素不是我可以左右。。。可
还是觉得自己的条件真的很适合去那些地方啊。。。继续捂脸，想争取朝正确的方向努
力一下。。。
