Also I didn't mention two aspects:
1) There is a debate that in the long term the tax rate is rising.
2) A retiree might have other types of incomes, such as business income,
short term capital gain (I hope investors are smart enough to control
short term trading when they get old. People with 100k/yr income usually
have quite a sizable regular investment account by the time they

Thursday, the IMF released a report named World Economic Outlook.
Its analytic chapter says that the recent spike in oil prices suggest
that the global oil market has entered a period of increased scarcity.
According to the report, the origins of this scarcity can be traced to
the tension between the upward shift in global oil consumption growth
due to fast-growing emerging market economies and supply constraints,
which have led to a downshift in oil supply growth.

The report notes that scarc... 阅读全帖

I assume you meant you got of domestic stock funds (int'l too?).
May I ask which asset class you rotated to? I am very wary of bond funds at
current prices.
I feel I am lucky that my 401K has a stable value fund paying close to 2%,
but I am afraid many others would have MM funds paying much less.
Even with a 2% yield, i am reluctant to keep a sizable allocation there, I wish my 401k had some type of dividend fund.

What do people think of a good assert allocation now after a sizable run-up

Personally, I don't like intermediate or long bonds here, I am a little bit
wary of int'l funds in developed markets, europe or japan. Euro and other
currencies have rebounded nicely; but in spite of whatever mandate BOE is
supposed to have, I am afraid it will have to print more money one way or
the other, so I am wondering if Euro will turn south sooner or later.

I think a sizable 401k plan usually offers an Institutional Class MM/stable
value fund that offers a better yield than one can get from a retail
investment account. Therefore, I can see why some want to trade in/out of
the market in a 401k since there is a ultra-low risk place one can park
large amount of cash and get a very competitive yield.

Buying houses seems a safe strategy, but managing/operating the house

Wondering if there're any hassle free real state investment. I have some

Some back of envelop calculation-based answers:
1. $1450/mth rent, assume avg 1 month vacancy/repair cost, property tax/
insurance at $3000, your annual net operating income = $12,950
So your cap rate is only 6% (1290/215000). Fair, but not great.
2. Refinance after 10 years is a great idea, at the appropriate rate level,
for several benefits: a. you can cash out a sizable equity for other
investments (presumbly higher than 6% :). b. re-leverage investment in this
property. c. regain tax... 阅读全帖

If your mortgage's interest rate is 4.5%, because it's tax-deductible, your
effective cost is only ~3%.
Do NOT prepay your mortgage!
Instead, invest your little extra money every month in index funds (pick
funds with no trading commission cost, super low expense, super efficient -
low turnover), don't overlook such little money each month, because after 10
-20 years, you will have sizable amount of investment, and over the long

1. Yes. the name is Individual Retirement Account (IRA), not Family or

2. No since ROTH contribution is after-tax money.
3. No, IRA and (taxable) accounts are separate accounts. Vanguard's
advantage is you can buy their own funds w/o transaction fees, and VG funds
are pretty good, at low cost. But if you want to buy other fund families

Not an attractive 401(k) lineup, but if I were in this position, I will
consider BlackRock Global Allocation and Franklin Mutual Global Discovery,
two cautious value funds. Not going to outperform much given their size, but
can let you sleep well. If the stable value pays 2% or more, a sizable

actually it doesn't matter about a broker is local or not, sizable or just
one person. For example, if a broker can get loan from PF for 15 yr or 30 yr

The most important thing is make sure a client has the power to review the

broker's business. In that case, a broker will most likely keep their

Residential Housing Ready to Awaken?
After half a decade of withering sales and slumping prices, there are strong

In some metropolitan areas, the market has bottomed, with both sales and

If the government shuts down, what happens to all the Uncle Sam-backed
mortgages that are in the pipeline? They account for about 90% of U.S. home
loans, so reducing that flow could hurt the housing recovery.
The good news is that most government-backed home loans - those purchased
and securitized by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - will be unaffected by a
shutdown. Those companies pay for their operations out of the fees that they
charge lenders.
