Just finished Ender's Game.
I suspected the novel was written during the cold war era with the world war
seemed imminent, the author felt very pessimistic about the future of
humanity. He thought human were bound to self-destruction because the evil in
people. Even the good people didn't deserve to be happy because there were

最近翻出阿西莫夫作品全集来重看,真挺有意思的,不仅囊括了他最早期那些名不见经
传的短篇,还有自己写的“创作感想”。看到TRENDS那一篇,居然发现他在1938年(当
时他还在读大学)成功预测成两件事:1)1940年第二次世界大战,2)1970年,人类登
月。
两件事都只差1年而已!
我一直觉得那个SF黄金时期的创作高峰,后来者很难翻越……

变形,眼睛的复杂结构哪里能这么简约的。真是纸上谈兵,想什么说什么。
文中谈到“If you have a 99.009901% chance of survival without the eye, it is
not that worth “developing it.” 这是论文使用的参数吗?这一点都不合理,相
对于有眼睛来说,没有眼睛的生存率应该是100%,因为现在也有很多生物没有眼睛的,
他们并没有什么生存的劣势。
关于变异回归,我的问题不是遗传率量化的问题,而是如何量化的问题,不应该是一个
固定的遗传率常数,一个变异的遗传率应该与该变异的量度成反比的,而且是非线性的

disappointed. First of all, ideal human relationship is not anyone's

ORM上手不难,学好不易。ORM也不仅仅runtime生成sql statement,完全可以生成
precompiled queries. ORM也可以invoke stored proc, 还能自动把结果map成
entities. ORM也没有强迫schema必须从application source code生成。Batch data
processing有各种各样的ETL工具可以处理,hibernate本来就不是干这个的。至于
transaction isolation的例子,本身就有问题,为何要在runtime更改txn isolation
level? 用个pessimistic locking就可以了。况且不是所有database都可以在runtime
改txn isolation level的。

systems biology is still at the stage of collecting data, you can visit Dr
Laufferburg's lab at MIT, you will have some idea of this data farm stage.
At best is to play with some simple toy model and make some small system in
cells and try to fit the toy model. Nothing generalized now.
bioinfo is more for the statistical analysis of genomic data.
nothing fancy so far. I am also pessimistic.

It is inappropriate to use this incidence as evidence to show that 生物之路
是死路一条. Although the job market for bio becomes more tough these days, i
know many smart bio ppls succeed in getting decent jobs either in industry
and academia. So please don't be so pessimistic!

LZ posted his sad story at MedicalCareer broad few months ago. It is also
bad for his boss to do this unprofessional trick to him. Maybe the
pessimistic outlook of biological research further exaggerate the bad
situation of current postdoc market. So many PI have to think of every
possibility to cut the expense and save money for themselves. It is the
greedy nature of capitalism.

Very pessimistic about pharmaceutical industry if there is no breakthrough
in drug discovery. Too many challenges nowadays, harder regulation,
increasing R&D cost, patent expiration, pipeline drought etc.
Before Pharm industry made good money and people like to invest to this
sector, but nowadays, conservative people are reluctant to invest in pharma/
biotech industry. R&D will gradually move to small biotech, research
institute, and universities where the compensation will be worse than that

I can tell people who are pessimistic right now that I'm in this field (4th
year PhD) and I found a very good job, although my field more specifically
is SLA (more research oriented and applicable to other foreign languages).
Other Chinese classmates more specially in the TESOL field are also getting
interviews.
Of course I don't want to mislead anyone. There's of course hope, the rest

I think life is never easy. For those ppl who went through this path well
before our knowledge of the existence of this career, it must be very hard for
them too. I believe if we work hard enough, we can do it too. Enother issue
is, I hope when I graduate which should be four years later, the market is at
least better than now.

I think you guys are a little too pessimistic with polymer science. There are
always some interesting problems if you are really interested in the science.
Generally speaking, I feel that american scientists are more interested in new
technology or they have to follow the hot topics to get funds. Whereas europen
scientists seem to have the previlege to do what they are really interested.
There are always hot topics at different time, but I am sure that only those
really interested in their work
