Indeed, there are many Ph.D. programs that can be closed. The first one on
my list to close would be the Religion program in Columbia university. Why
do we need Ph.D.'s specializing in religion? Leave that area to the rabis
and ministers!

回答你帖子最后那几个问题:
1. 我挺享受academia的。跟胖头鱼一样,我非常不喜欢坐班,实习的时候证实了这一
点,打那以后我就坚定的没有考虑工业界的offer了,虽然工业界工资大致能翻倍;
2. 老婆的问题各家不一样,看你有个事业型的老婆还是愿意牺牲自己支持你事业型的
老婆。因为很多研究型大学都在农村,老婆不一定能找到对口的工作。
3. 孩子的问题当faculty很多时候是个plus吧,时间灵活,迟到早退都没问题,接送孩
子都很方便。
4. 你应该离开学术界与否只能你自己衡量。你列举出来的pro只有一个,就是你喜欢科
研;你列出来的cons有n条,也都很客观的存在。但对于有些人来说,那一条pro
outweighs 其他所有的cons, 也有人不这么weight. 这就case by case了。

丈母娘丈母爷的矛盾;结果这两天一看,又是夫妻之间甚至家长和小孩儿之间的。。。
琢磨着婚姻可能不是一个一定美好的东西,而是一个壳子。里头是心里美还是赛蜜糖还
是苦砒霜都要看两个人的共同付出,甚至双方的家人。
若是自己连中学生守则,甚至小学生守则都做不到。那又要怎么言传身教地去当个好家
长,甚至是能带出遵守那些守则的好孩子的家长呢?
工作讲究有个技能列表,这样才能为雇主创造价值。
家庭的话,感觉也有一些事情需要掌握,才能保证以后能为家庭创造价值嘛~``
可是这个,学校不说爹妈也不教,朋友之间可能还喜欢攀比什么的。结果本来通过社会
洗礼、自我反省和不断改进后可以掌握多种技能创造美好生活的同学们,跳级成家,发

rest for other investment opportunities.
option 1 could give you high return. But at the current price level, I
believe the risk of entering China's property market way outweighs the
rewards. Chinese real estate market is already a bubble, fueled by
government's loose monetary policy. Of course, it could easiy go up another
20% and nobody knows when it will pop, just as any bubble.

A caution - don't fall into the "tax avoidance" trap.
An "advisor" will stress the benefits of saving taxes because that's what
you want to hear. However, they will not tell you the costs incurred in
order to "reduce tax", if you run the numbers, you will find out those costs
tend to far outweigh the tax savings, especially if you have a long
investment time horizon ...

So I guess you shouldn't be investing in 401K or any kind of IRA since you
are stuck too until 59 1/2. It's SPARE MONEY and 0% interest is not stuck.
If you want to call it inflexibility then it is fine with me. I am glad my
child is protect with living benefits if something happens to him so in
that sense stuck/inflexibility = protection then I am happy to take it.

Blindly using the latest expensive drug is not a good idea. Your family
should get as much info as possible (histology type, spreading range,
general health), in order to see if surgery, chemo etc. are applicable or
worthwhile (i.e. with clearly defined possible benefit outweighing side
effects) in his case.

If your baby has no problem, then you did right. If your baby had incurred
a injury, you missed the window for early intervention.
Does the risk of injury outweigh the adverse effect of radiation exposure on
a 10-mon-old baby? No one knows at this point.
I know I am not being helpful. What I am trying to say is that this is one

Given the situation, there is little point in starting chemo. The benefit
of a certain procedure/treatment should outweigh the risks.

I know some economics. Generally you may think Chinese are rich when RMB
appricaites, which makes imports relatively cheaper. That's good. But, on
the other hand, exports are more expensive. And please remember that a signifcant
part of China's growth is coming from export (that's what US is blaming China
for preventing RMB from appreciation). So, simply speaking, if RMB appreciates, the costs

to milk it to the last drop. I'm too lazy to cash out AmEx prepaid card at a
local CU every month for 3 months.
