当时英国贩卖鸦片的商人其实得不到政府的支持, 当年英国反对战争的意见也很大.
Elliot也是被清朝和英国政府夹在中间, 做人困难. Elliot当初为了解决中国政府困住
英国商人不提供食物直到英国商人把所有鸦片都交出来, 就跟英国商人说损失由政府赔
偿. 英国政府根本不卖他的帐, 说政府不支持smuggling. 其实Elliot自己也是反对鸦
片贸易的, 但是没有能力来regulate. Elliot也没有中国教科书上说得那么坏. 后来是
清朝政府禁止向英国商人提供水和食物的事情越来越多, 而且还使用军队来对付他们的
消息传到英国以后, 碰上当时外交部的secretary Lord Palmerston是一个好战分子 (

几乎没什么好处。他批译文没有翻译后半句，可译文里明明有。
马克思的原文是宗教是人民的鸦片，前面一句是被压迫心灵的叹息，整体是反宗教的。
网上有篇潘岳的文章说“宗教是统治阶级麻醉人民的鸦片”是列宁提出来的，但wiki上

答：英国政府贩卖鸦片给中国，是为了鸦片贸易的利益，以及想打开中国对外贸易大门
。当时清政府闭关自守，并不注意对外贸易，设置重重障碍甚至屡次禁止外国运货来中
国贸易，仅仅将对外关系视为“宣扬国威”的形式之一；但中国的茶叶和丝网等货物源
源出口，使中国的外贸长期处于高额顺差之中，令欧洲的白银大量流入中国，只有鸦片
贸易才改变了这种状况。英国政府唯利是图，残害中国人，甚至不惜诉诸战争来保让毒
品贸易，这种可耻的行径是与基督教精神完全背道而驰的。

Sorry for interrupting your discussion. I agree with you that taking away
people's religion forcefully is a cruel thing, but I think the statement
itself 'religion is the opium of the masses' is not far from the truth,
the kind of hard cold truth that is not "pleasurable" and sounds not
"positive" to most people's mind.
What are the similarities between religion and opium?
1) they both give people the feeling of happiness(even ecstasy) and relaxation
2) they both poison people's healthy mind a |

大家知道belladonna吧， beautiful lady的意思， 因为这玩意可以把pupil dilated
， 让women 好看。 为什么？ 因为它含有atropine。 大家都知道扩瞳是
anticolinergic effect， 所以如果知道belladonna的beautiful lady的典故， 傻子
都可以从belladonna中萃取atropine。
青篙素是从青篙中萃取的， 怎么萃取的真的不是那么重要， 重要的是为什么选了青篙
。 青篙如果不是中药， 如果没有相关的药性， 屠老太太她再聪明，也不会把它放到
那200种草药中筛选。
科学当然需要运气， 但偶然性里蕴含了必然性。
opium含有morphine， 知道了morphine的结构， medicinal chemistry就可以把它变构
， 搞出成千上万的衍生物， 然后screen出更selective， powerful的镇痛药物。 如
果要论功给赏， 发现opium的止痛效应应该是首首功。

用diamorphine的名字，在英国是处方药。在很多国家也是控制的处方药。
