Short-Term Investments - FIDELITY PRIME FUND

When we talk about investment, it's always important to keep in mind
that we are seeking long-term future return, but not short-term past
return. Blindly chasing performance is one of the biggest mistakes you
can make.
When you see something good, you need to ask why it was doing good,
and whether it will do the same good in the future, instead of just
saying "hey, let's jump into it."
When you see something bad, you need to ask why it was doing bad,
and whether it will do the same bad in the fu

ok, ok, let us put the definition aside. Back to the question: how to invest
in a long term?

don't want to send kids to private schools).

Thanks for the computation.
But no, I never intended to do short-term trading to replace
"what should be" a traditional IRA. I only intend to buy-and-
hold in a regular investment account in substitution of 401k
or traditional IRA.
I understand paying less tax on gains is the only way to beat tax
deductible accounts, hehe. What I meant was your "in the heaven"
scenario -- short term capital gains in tax deferred accounts.
Because of that, I prefer traditional IRA over 401k (non-matching
part). B

yes indeed, I totally agree: if you can just nudge the returns/growth on
traditional IRA accounts even by a tiny bit in the early years through some
trading, you'd get a much larger return in the end. And traditional IRA does
give you more flexibility over most 401k in terms of investement selections
, that said, more trades and more flexibilities also translate to more
chances of shooting oneself in the foot...
I do want to point out another thing that is difference between a

If you are really concerned about your investment (or speculation) and
want to have limit downside. Use the collar strategy.
Buy stock at 100, buy leap 95put and sell 105call, usually they are about
the same price. So you limit your upside and downside to 5%. You can
also pay a premimum to buy 100p and sell 105c or 110c.

Is Your Home a Good Investment?

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
There's the usual talk about what the latest Case-Shiller house price data
mean for the next short term move in the real estate market. Has housing
bottomed? If not, has the rate of decline slowed? And when will we see an
upturn?
Human nature likes the short term. Which is why so little attention is paid
to something that is probably more important, if less urgent: What the

It is all about expectation.
I expect 0% inflation adjusted return from the house. So I will consider
anything positive a surprise on the plus side.
I also don't take 2% real return from the government bonds for granted,
especially given the flaw in measuring CPI. So I think home could be a good
investment, depending on your circumstances.
Just like I never expect 12% return from equity. So bear market does not
dampen my hope for returns from the equity market.

Isn't home investment all about the rent? Very few people would
buy a home, leave it empty, and sell it after 5 years bah.
Rent can easily generate 4-5% revenue. And the house itself doesn't
depreciate. I don't know what's better than that, hehe. Surely
this thing beats the gold bricks (on paper).

I guess the author was talking about people who think that they can build a
nest egg in their homes, not taking about real estate investment per se.
for example, if you pay 500k for a home today, 10 years later you sell your
home, the return on the 500k is far less than the return if you put the
money in government bonds.

you are correct about buying high yield treasury when inflation spikes, but
let's run some numbers comparing putting your money into munis versus saving
it in a bank.
option 1 - buying muni bond

years to maturity = 5 (terms = 10)
coupon = 200 (i.e. 10,000 * 4% / 2 )

3.Fund

On principle, yes. But few truly has a good idea about their own risk-
tolerance level, how much money they need to use in the future, and/or when
to cash out what portion of their investment. Then again, this is true to
all investors, index-funds-based or not...
If you have index funds in your porfolio, the less money someone will take
from you and the more you keep for yourself.

In Year of Investing Dangerously, Buffett Looked 'Into the Abyss'

Warren Buffett believes his best deals during the economy's
biggest belly flop since the Crash of 1929 may well turn out to be
the ones he didn't do.
Mr. Buffett slammed the door on one opportunity after another

概念没得到精确定义;只给了你定性描述,没有定量描述。
比如说投资要保守的Fund一些,激进的fund的一些。
这些都是烂大街的理论了。关键还是数字。多少算保守,多少算激进。
