我来解释一下吧：石油和服务工程师不一定是在什么公司的，什么公司都有那些职位，
不管是石油公司还有油服公司
油工统称为petroleum engineer，基本上是一帮学petroleum engineering，geology，
geophysics这类，勘探，评估，也就是说，早期决定一块油田值多少钱的工程师，这些
人才赚的多（只能羡慕一下了），可以跟码工pk一下
剩下的就是油服了，就是去挖，各种挖，比如onshore地上挖，offshore，海上搭台子
挖，所以油服基本都是ME,CIVIL,OCEAN E，之类的专业的人。。。都是屌丝。。。比如
我。。。 |

发帖数: 1657 | 10 首先声明，我不是学油工专业的，我是码工，但是由于本人学校比较特殊，我认识的所
有中国同学，里面大概有一般都是geophysics, geology and petro engineering的，
从我来美国，我亲眼见证了他们怎么一个个的去的大石油公司，而且并不怎么费力(至
少提前半年锁定offer，而且phd期间summer intern很容易就搞到，实习工资在texas
6k-9k不等，当然这个和他们phd做的项目都是大石油公司sponsor有关)。
毕业后，他们(PHD)大多从事的职位是geophysical scientist, geologist, petro
engineer, reservoir engineer(这个比较例外是一个本科学petro的朋友在从事)，工
资在不同公司待遇不等，Exxon给的最多(Phd 150k+/year)，其次是Shell,BP(120k+)等
，Chevron,ConocPhilips之类的不是他们的第一选择。我罗列的数字是我个人知道的，
也许样本有限，但是是真实数据。而且我从来没听说过有什么身份问题，h1b，绿卡根

standard package, 求教下怎么negotiate。
base: 128k, sign-on 18k, relocation 16k, cash+stock bonus target: 20% of
base. pension 按工龄 6%-8%. vacation 2 weeks.
对base 基本满意，因为德州没有州税，到手比例较加州纽约高不少。就是vacation 太
少了。求问怎么negotiate 有效一些，另外还有什么值得谈谈，比如start day?

you can try getting information from city hall), ask them about local
geology and regulation. Mostly, to get water from shallow well, you need:
1. high water table.
2. sandy soil.
3. It's allowed by the city.
Your local government should have this information. |

来到新州２年，总算买到房子，想分享一下买房过程，供大家参考
１首先确定买房的区域，这是由多种因素共同决定的,比如:承受价位,学区考虑,夫妻双
方工作地点，resale value,地税的多少，人口构成，治安情况，交通便利etc
1-1先说说承受能力吧，新州的地税全美最高，经常很多房子地税高过mortgage，不是
假话，很多town税高的吓人，而且还每年上调。一般来说在union county附近，相同的
大小房子summit的地税最高，高过westfield＞new providence>scotch plains＞
berkeley heights>watchung，warren＞north edison>mountainside.所以最好买税前
收入２－３倍的价位房子,风险会小些.可能我比较保守，但是我觉的在NJ住大房子不值

.
There are a lot of IT opportunities, most for oil service companies, or
trading companies. IT got paid lower than geology/geophysics majors :(.
Houston is a good place for raising family. In other word, there is nothing
to do except raising family in Houston :) |

从新英格兰出发，历时八个小时飞越三千多英里，在delay more than 2hours
以后到达正在浓烟烈火中熏烤的San Diego，照着前人的指导(Geology,极为详细,
感激不尽)顺利的找到travelodge,一晚上住的还不错，可能是因为住旅馆的侧面，
并没有什么嘈杂。翌日,八点二十出发，吃早饭，过境，打的，交钱，在使馆正式
开始排队，一排就是两个多小时，到了门口查看了I156,157,158; appointment
letter; receipt; passport,放进去,等照相,照相,放到外厅继续等,又是一个多
小时,到了将近12点半,最终得以进入--
面试:
一进门,第一个反映是避开3号胖子,结果由于大部分窗口都关闭,只看到了二号口,
于是凑上去,事实证明这并没有帮多大忙,二号的褐发男今天并不开心,而且经常
和三号商量,甚至问三号该做什么决定.我在解释我研究专业时,他听不懂甚至还把
三号叫过来一起研究!(晕倒),倒是三号当天心情不坏,同去的F1同志一会就过了,
差点连成绩单都忘看.不过幸亏我做的的确不sensitive,长时间的争辨和煎熬过后

在校刊上看到最近40年的热门专业变迁（见末尾的附图），近年排名第一的经济专业，
40年前连前五名都没进。40年前排名第一的英语专业，本年度第一次被挤出前五。40年
前排名第二的历史，本年度还在第四名——不容易啊。生物排第三，是不是比国内吃香。
总听说心理学专业难找工作，但也排名第五。这个热门专业排名看来和实用专业排名不
一样。
又去找了找别的学校的热门专业情况。princeton开宗明义说热门专业不等于找工作方
便，不是给你一个固定的职业道路，而是教你各种skill sets，适用于不同职业。然后
