老妈在国内，有个做保险的朋友，三天两头推销各种保险，老妈昨天和我说了一个，
咋觉得有点不对劲：
每年往里投一万，当年返还1000，等12年以后，可以取全部本金（12万）出来，
否则有很多penalty。
老妈说这个好，因为APY相当于10%，可是我觉得不该那么算吧？
应该相当于每年投9000元钱，如果APY是x，那么公式（单位为w）应该是
第一年末：0.9
第二年末：0.9+0.9*(1+x)
第三年末：0.9+(0.9+0.9*(1+x))*(1+x)
如此类推，到了第12年末：
(0.9 + (... + (0.9 + 0.9 * (1+x)) * (1+x) ) *(1+x))... = 12
也就是
0.9 * ( 1 + 1+x + (1+x)^2 + ... + (1+x)^11 ) = 12

rate of return at a stunning 128% APY for the past 2 years.
BTW: is my way of calculation right?
1) I first computed the median house price drop in the past 2 years. ($A)
2) I then computed the total rent I paid in the past 2 years. ($B)
3) I then computed sqrt(A/B) - 1 = C%. (note: 2 years yield A/B-1)
4) I finally double C% to become D% = 128%. (note: I assumed DCA yield is

Since I moved to Seattle (right at the house price peak), my rent's APY
is 298%.
Had I rented a house instead at approximately double the rent I am paying
right now, the APY would be 133%.

good to me, hehe. |

1) In the long run the market has a positive alpha (APY), which beats
if I stay away.
2) If the beta is much larger than the alpha, it's not hard to beat
the alpha APY by trading. i.e., the ideal scenario would be an upward
index, with huge volatility -- that's speculator's heaven. (Actually your
SMA method would work great in that case.) |

stock APY would beat if I stay away -- which is the CD/bond APY.
Actually I would like to know how many percent people on stock board
beats the index in the past 5 year. I think it shouldn't be as low as
20%, as many investment firms claim.
The bad thing is nobody does that kind of tracking on stock board.
If the DOW indeed has low alpha and high beta, most SMA method would work.

the overall cost. 换句话说，偶认为空仓是一种投资策略，是你人为
选择的，而不是被迫的。如果不计算的话，偶的YTD和这里许多人的YTD
要高很多。
再换一个角度考虑，偶的算法的YTD对应于如果偶是一个MF manager, 每天
公布的NAV的值. 偶决定空仓还是满仓，但是客户一旦投给偶钱，他就有权
分一杯羹了（随时都可以按照NAV取出钱）。举例来说，偶的MF业绩不错，
APY 20%，图形很好看。于是这天一个大鳄看中了偶，买了一大堆偶的MF,
导致MF的资产总值翻倍。如果偶不赶紧把这新钱用掉（买入equity）的话，
偶的APY将减速一倍，马上就不好看了。要知道大鳄的expectation可是20%，
只要低于这个值，他随时会撤资。。。所以说偶觉得没有道理cash不计算
入成本。 |

function). What I am saying is that one can roughly estimate the DCA APY
just by looking at the shape of the NAV curve. For me, mid-2007
till now DCA on VISGX cannot get 30% APY (which is its past 1-year return,

It depends. If they can be deposited, the letter should say that. Ask the
people in the CC company first.
Specifically, some letters may mail you several transfer checks, maybe only 1
or 2 of which you can deposit, so make sure give them the check number to let
them verify that it can be done.
You should note there may be a balance transfer fee, be clear about that too.
