Among the companies whose shares are expected to actively trade in Thursday'
s session are Netflix Inc. (NFLX), eBay Inc. (EBAY) and Alliance Data System
Corp. (ADS).
Netflix said Wednesday that its third-quarter earnings improved 26%, topping
its expectations as revenue and margins grew and subscriber-acquisition
costs fell. Subscriber-acquisition costs, a metric closely watched by
investors in the online movie rental company, declined 26%. The churn rate--
a measure of customer cancellations and free subscribers--decreased to 3.8%
from 4.4%. Shares climbed 12% to $171.60 in premarket trading.
EBay's evolution toward becoming a PayPal-focused company continued in the
latest quarter as the San Jose company reported better-than-expected results
because of strength in its online payment business. According to eBay,
PayPal ended the quarter with 90 million active accounts worldwide, adding
more than a million new accounts each month during the quarter. EBay also
announced a $2 billion stock buyback as well as plans to issue up to $1.5
billion in term debt financing under the company's existing shelf
registration statement. EBay shares rose 7.4% to $27.55 during premarket
trading.
Alliance Data System's third-quarter profit surged 16% on revenue growth at
its private-label and Epsilon segments. Shares slid 6.2% to $58.80 in
premarket trading as the loyalty-program and private-label credit-card
operator projected disappointing earnings for the current period and
adjusted its earnings view for the year.
Children's Place Retail Stores Inc. (PLCE) cut its fiscal third-quarter
earnings forecast to account for comparable retail sales falling some 5% so
far during the period for the children's retailer. Shares dropped 10% to $46
.50 premarket.
Hershey Co.'s (HSY) third-quarter earnings climbed 11% as the chocolate
maker saw its sales and margins increase. Still, organic sales - a key
metric that typically excludes acquisitions and foreign exchange - were
below some analysts' expectations. In a statement, Hershey said the timing
of some "seasonal shipments" dampened third-quarter sales by about one
percentage point. But those shipments were moved to early October and fourth
-quarter sales will be higher than expected, the company said. Still, shares
slid 4.1% to $49 in premarket trading.
Nokia Corp. (NOK) posted third-quarter earnings way ahead of expectations,
providing a boost for new Chief Executive Stephen Elop and for the company's
share price and a strong signal that fight back against its smartphone
rivals has begun. Shares rose 6% to $11.48 in premarket trading.
McDonald's Corp.'s (MCD) third-quarter earnings rose 10% as the world's
largest hamburger chain's U.S. sales got a boost from its blended-ice
beverages and continued international growth. The results beat analysts'
expectations and shares were up 1.6% to $78.62 in recent premarket trading.
Caterpillar Inc.'s (CAT) third-quarter profit surged 96% as machinery sales
jumped sharply from last year's moribund level, helping the company post
results that easily topped Wall Street's expectations. Shares were up 1.2%
to $80.86 in premarket trading as Caterpillar also lifted its full-year
income target.
Fidelity National Financial Inc. (FNF) announced Chief Executive Alan
Stinson stepped down as third-quarter profit rose 13%, with cost-cutting
more than offseting declining revenue. Stinson will remain with the title
insurance company as an executive vice president. He was succeeded by Chief
Operating Officer George Scanlon. Share fell 2.3% to $14.40 premarket.
Cardiome Pharma Corp. (CRME) said its partner Astellas Pharma Inc. (ALMPY)
had supsended enrollment in a study on its treatment for irregular heart-
rhythm because a patient suffered an event of cardiogenic shock, an event
that leads to cardiac arrest. The drug development company said the FDA has
requested more information before allowing the study to continue. Cardiome
shares dropped 25% to $4.75 premarket.
Green Bankshares Inc. (GRNB) reported a third-quarter loss of $36.4 million,
nearly five-times the year ago loss as the Tennessee regional bank said a "
handful" of credit events sent impairments higher. Loan charge offs during
the quarter, at $36.5 million, were seven times the charges off from the
previous quarter. Shares plunged 42% to $3.75 premarket.
JetBlue Airways Corp.'s (JBLU) third-quarter profit nearly quadrupled--but
just missed analysts' estimates--as the top line rebounded amid strong gains
in traffic and a key revenue gauge. Its shares rose 2.9% to $7.15 premarket
.
Seagate Technology Inc.'s (STX) fiscal first-quarter profit fell 17% on
lower margins, and the computer disk-drive maker's results fell short of
Wall Street's expectations. The discount carrier's passenger revenue per
available seat mile jumped 13%. Shares slipped 1.2% to $15.03 premarket.
Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) swung to a third-quarter profit, beating
analysts' estimates, as revenue recovered. Shares were up 4.1% at $13.70 in
recent premarket trading as Chairman and Chief Executive Gary Kelly said the
company expects "a solid unit revenue improvement in fourth quarter 2010,
even with more difficult year-over-year comparisons."
SunTrust Banks Inc. (STI) posted a surprise third-quarter profit as the
regional bank was the latest to report sharply lower loan-loss provisions.
Shares rose 3.5% to $26.35 in premarket action.
Terex Corp.'s (TEX) third-quarter loss narrowed as revenue and margins
increased, but its cranes business continued to worsen. Shares slid 4.7% to
$23.60 in premarket trading as the construction-machinery maker's results
fell short of Wall Street's expectations.
Xilinx Inc.'s (XLNX) fiscal second-quarter profit more than doubled as sales
set a record for the fourth quarter in a row. But the programmable-chip
maker predicted that third-quarter revenue that missed Wall Street's
expectations. Shares fell 2.7% to $25.31 premarket.
General Mills Inc. (GIS) is raising prices on some cereals and baking
products, a clear signal that food makers will pass some pressure from
higher commodity costs on to retailers and consumers. The company is taking
a "low-single-digit" percentage price increase on some of its cereals, a
spokeswoman said. Shares slipped 1.3% to $36.70 premarket.
Watch List:
Accenture PLC (ACN) announced that Pierre Nanterme will be promoted to chief
executive on Jan. 1 after heading the consultancy's financial-services
operations the past three years. He will succeed William Green, who will
remain chairman.
Alcon Inc.'s (ACL) third-quarter profit declined 13% as costs related to a
change of majority ownership of the eye-care products company masked higher
revenue and improved margins.
AptarGroup Inc.'s (ATR) third-quarter earnings rose 40% to beat views, but
the product-dispenser maker was downbeat about earnings for the current
quarter because of dollar strength and a tough comparison.
Covanta Holding Corp. (CVA) third-quarter earnings fell 51% as the renewable
-energy company's growth in operating expenses outpaced that of weaker-than-
expected revenue.
E*Trade Financial Corp. (ETFC) posted its second consecutive quarterly
profit as the online brokerage again set aside less money for current and
future potential losses. E*Trade, which has been hammered by bad loans made
by its banking unit, also felt the pain of a slowdown in trading activity,
as daily average revenue trades--or DARTs, a measure of trading levels--
plunged 30% from a year earlier, and 26% from the second quarter.
HNI Corp.'s (HNI) third-quarter profit fell 11% as the office furniture and
hearth maker posted narrower margins, although the company was able to
report higher sales for the second consecutive quarter after a prolonged
slump. Still, results for the second-largest office furniture manufacturer
in the world and the nation's leading maker of gas- and wood-burning
fireplaces badly missed Wall Street's expectations.
Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP's (KMP) third-quarter profit declined 11%
on lower margins and hedging losses, although revenue increased. The
pipeline operator's results fell short of Wall Street's expectations, but
the partnership raised its cash distribution. The company, which operates
natural gas and oil pipelines and terminals, benefits from long-term, fee-
based contracts, which helped insulate it from commodity price swings.
Lam Research Corp.'s (LRCX) fiscal first-quarter profit dramatically
increased as the semiconductor capital-equipment maker posted higher revenue
and margins, helping the company's results top Wall Street's expectations.
Raymond James Financial Inc.'s (RJF) fiscal fourth-quarter earnings jumped
61% in better-than-expected results that beat or neared records, as the
regional broker's biggest segment again drove the gains. The investment
banking and wealth management firm said net revenue hit a record high and
income approached 2007's record.
Robert Half International Inc.'s (RHI) third-quarter profit more than
doubled on across-the-board revenue gains and cost containment. The
temporary-staffing company is best known for its Accountemps brand.
Total System Services Inc.'s (TSS) third-quarter profit dropped 17% as
revenue edged up but costs jumped. The payment-services provider, whose
technologies support consumer finance and credit and debit cards for
financial institutions, raised its forecast for 2010 earnings.
Tractor Supply Co. (TSCO), the biggest U.S. dealer for farmers and ranchers,
reported third-quarter earnings rose 46% as strong sales of animal and pet-
related merchandise helped the results top estimates.
