The Mountain in the Mist
Prologue
Far, far away sat a mountain that was entirely shrouded in mist. No one knew
that what may lay far back in the mountain. Legends told the tale of
fairies that live there. The answer was not far off. A fairy queen sat
watching her subjects making the castle polished and clean, for she knew her
time was almost up. The new fairy queen was yet to be found, in the human
world. Out of three girls only one may be the queen. And that one could
choose to share this world for her companions or keep it to herself while
the human world faded away from her memories. Yet, the other two of the
three girls shall also have a chance to have important jobs. They shall
remain in the human world, or become fairies and serve the kingdom. But
first they must become friends or the fairy empire would weaken and turn to
glass then fade away. Next would be the human world. The fate of the whole
entire world lies in the hands of these three girls…
Chapter 1
What a strange dream, thought Felicia Kiang, and yet it seemed so real. But
was it true that a fairy kingdom needed her help to save the empire from
crumbling down into dust? That she could become queen? She had to meet two
other girls on the lower playground at high noon? “No, no,” she said to
herself knowing it can’t be true. Or could it? She dressed into camouflage
shorts and a T-shirt, pulled her hair into a tight ponytail, put on a
sweatband, pulled on her running socks, slipped on her sneakers and slinked
outside, jogging to school. Well, so much for queen business, if the two
other girls were going to meet her there at high noon, which she was going
there, and got the same dream, they would have got to know that she was a
sports person. A tom-boy is definitely NOT fit to be queen. The other two
will also get a chance to be queen anyway. And they were free to want to be
queen as much as they wanted.
Queen, Me? Thought Annabelle Peng. Now to her that seemed right. She was
always up on the latest fashions and she felt she was perfect for the job.
Annabelle was a pinch snotty, but she was also was a great leader, very fair
, and she was also kind. She was just fancy, which wasn’t a bad thing, and
everybody admired her. But she brushed off all the compliments anyway. She
was still wondering if it was actually true when she decided to wear her red
rose dress with the fancy ruffles. She quickly snapped on the matching red
headband along with her rose colored leggings and the rose high heels. She
wanted to have a very good impression on the girls she was going to meet. Of
course she was very rich and had a good chance of becoming a billionaire,
so she always drove a deep red limousine to school, and she had perfect lady
etiquette. Me, of course might get tons of compliments. Not that I have
anything against it, but the people who say them don’t know anything about
what’s underneath all the fashions and frills, she thought .
The strangest dream, but imagine me QUEEN!!! Never mind. Impossible, thought
Alice Chen. Was she really supposed to meet the other girls at the lower
playground at high noon. Never mind, she was still going to do it. She wasn
’t exactly a tom-boy or a girly-girl, she was in between. To school she
wore a small T-shirt and shorts, except different styles of them. Usually
she wore her digital wristwatch, which sometimes helped her with her words
and speeches by beeping the color green if they were good, and beeping the
color red if they were bad. She was a good speaker and was good at settling
fights with words, not fists. Alice quickly put on her clothes and she got
ready for school. Never mind breakfast, She thought. All she needed was a
juicy tangerine from the tangerine tree in her backyard. Then she got her
bike but hesitated. Something was sparkling on her bike. Then it blew off
and floated towards the Mountain in the Mist. Alice couldn’t believe her
eyes. That was definitely a dream. She pinched herself. Nope, she was still
wide awake. She shook her head and rode to school.
Chapter 2
The three girls were not happy with the results. Annabelle and Felicia both
regarded the other with disgusted looks. “So this, this junk, is what I’m
supposed to be working with?” Annabelle said, glaring at Felicia. “And I’
m supposed to be working with this FANCY junk, too?” Felicia shot back,
returning the glance.“PLEASE!” Alice broke the two apart. “First, let’s
just know each other a bit more. Okay, I’ll go first. I’m Alice, and I
like exercising and riding my bike. And- hey, did you guys get this strange
dream?” Both Felicia and Annabelle nodded. Then they glared at each other
again. “I’m Felicia, and I’m a tom-boy, and I’m not interested in queen
business. Unless there IS an adventure through, I’ll be ready.” Annabelle
replied, “Tom-boy? Oh boy. I really think that I’m fit to be queen, since
I know everything about fashion. Also, I am absolutely going to pass
everything that the queen puts out for us, since I’m so dainty and poised.”
Felicia stared at Annabelle in disbelief. “I just can’t believe that YOU
think that YOU are going to pass the tests. Couldn’t you see that in the
dream, all of us had a fair chance? Anyway, do you even have any idea where
we are going? I do. We have to go to the back of the mountain.” Alice
shook her head. “I thought we were going to the top of the mountain.”
Annabelle laughed, doing anything to provoke Felicia. “Yeah, why are we
going to the BACK of the mountain?” Sighing, Felicia pointed out that “the
fairy queen said: ‘GO to the Mountain in the Mist. TO the mountain is your
path. THE whole fairyland depends on you. BACK in the human world, you are
all alone. OF all, you are chosen. THE choice is yours. MOUNTAIN it is.’
Can’t you see that the first words are GO TO THE BACK OF THE MOUNTAIN? Here
, I’ll show you why I noticed.” Felicia got out her blue bag and poured
out its contents onto the grass. Out came a candelabra, a rope, an anchor, a
tranquilizer gun, and her textbooks. Annabelle couldn’t help saying, “Wow
.” Alice’s face was also full of awe. Then Felicia said, “There’s
something I need to tell you guys. Something really important about my past.
Not good, but important.” | c*****y

Chapter 3
“I’m an orphan,” Felicia confessed. “My parents died in a fire, before
I was even one. I’m living LEGALLY, alone, in an abandoned house. The
government pays for my food, shelter, and clothing.” After Felicia had
finished speaking, Alice brought up her story. “My parents died because of
yellow fever. From then on I hated mosquitoes. I now live in my Aunt Wang's
house. She died too, but I got legal permission to live in the house. No one
can buy the house, unless they want to be arrested.” Annabelle barely
uttered the words, “I was abandoned.” The three girls stared at each
other, for once feeling a connection. Alice then said, “Well, does anyone
know how to get to the Mountain in the Mist?” Felicia, whose geography was
the best, raised her hand replying, “We can go past the Fearing Forest,
across Lucky-not-Lake, walk on the Treacherous Trail, then we’ll go around
the Mountain in the Mist, and SCAT! We’re on the mountain!
Annabelle declared, “You’re kidding me! Isn’t that the most dangerous way
?!” Felicia shrugged, “But the quickest.” The three girls looked at each
other, then Annabelle suggested, “Same time tomorrow?” The other girls
nodded. Felicia said, “But first, we have recess.” Annabelle suddenly
exploded, “RECESS? I have to stay with this, this… JUNK!!! I’d rather eat
a million apples!” Felicia shouted back, “Because apples are much tastier
, hmmm?” Alice said calmly, “You know, we probably should forget about
this whole thing if you guys keep arguing. Then none of us would get to use
our talents. How can we do this mission if you keep arguing? Then I bet the
whole world would fade away. I know you want to be queen, Annabelle, and you
, Felicia, want to prove your loyalty, dignity, and pride. Felicia, you want
to be able to prove that you are brave. I just want to help everyone. Do
you? This is important. Urgent. Sooner or later we have to become friends.”
Alice’s wristwatch beeped the color green. Thank goodness. And I thought I
did really bad, She thought.
Chapter 4
Felicia stormed home, in a much darker mood than she thought she would have
after she had met the other two. Okay, Alice is okay, but Annabelle, that
ANNABELLE! I can’t believe I have to WORK with her! Thoughts stormed
through Felicia’s mind as she stomped on the creaky stairs. Felicia didn’t
even want to be queen. Why would she do this? To save the fairy and humans
worlds, Felicia answered to herself. Once upstairs, Felicia pounced on her
bed. She rolled over and glanced out the window, hoping that it would make
her feel better. Then she froze. A little “butterfly” was flying towards
her. No wait, it wasn’t a butterfly, it looked like a little storm cloud
that was glittering. And it was moving away from her. Felicia was puzzled.
From all the fairytales she had read, the cloud matched the description of
fairy dust. But fairy dust was supposed to come to people, not float away!
After school, Annabelle returned home, feeling embarrassed that she argued
with Felicia. She could have just beaten me up, then and there. I was lucky
she was so kind not to. Maybe Alice was right. Maybe I should stop arguing.
She felt guilty that she argued with Felicia now. But by arguing with
Felicia, would I really destroy the fairy AND human world? She went
downstairs to her comfy, plush couched living room and sat down on her soft
sofa. She felted a huge spirit rising when she thought again that she could
become queen. Maybe going along that very dangerous path was worth it as
long as she could become queen. Then Annabelle sat up straight. What if she
didn’t pass the tests? Then she would have gone all that way for nothing.
Oh well, at least there was a chance that she was going to win the contest.
A few seconds later, she thought of another flaw. What if they were killed
before they reached the Mountain in the Mist? She needed to pack some “in-
cases,” her most helpful friends. Annabelle lay back down, feeling happy
and content that she had thought of a plan to help her friends.
Alice was so glad that it worked out. She was afraid that her talents wouldn
’t come in handy. At least she brought them back together for a day. It
would be a total catastrophe if Felicia and Annabelle argued on their way
there day, and night. Alice had typed the route onto her prized computer
that she invented herself, when she hit ENTER after she typed in the route,
she was flabbergasted to find that it would take almost a week to reach the
Mountain in the Mist. That was better than the other routes, which would
take a month to get there though. The strange thing was though, even though
her parents died, it felt that only her father died, not her mother.
Memories suddenly flooded into her. Was there really a way you can bring
back the dead? Or is it just a fairytale story? How come I keep feeling that
my mom is alive? She asked herself. No, she can’t keep wondering, she had
an important job to do, and she would have to complete it.

Chapter 5
“Okay, we go this way, then this way, keep right…” All the girls had met
at the same time at the same place and Felicia was pointing out the
directions to the Mountain in the Mist. Annabelle rolled her eyes, thinking,
How lucky are we that we didn’t get into any danger. Felicia burst into
her thoughts saying in sarcastic way, “Daydreaming, Annaball? Why don’t we
just kick you over the fence? You aren’t helping anyway.” Alice cleared
her throat. “AnnaBELLE, we decided to go RIGHT NOW. We have to sneak out of
school. Felicia’s geography skills will show us the way. We have to
prepare for danger. Most importantly, we have to work as a team, which means
, no more arguing, PLEASE! Don’t even look at me like I’m helpless. I’m
trying to help, I don’t care if I don’t become queen. All I want to do is
help the whole entire world, I’m tired of having to do so many speeches.
All I want is for us to get along. Okay?”
The three girls looked at each other. “Okay,” Felicia said, “ first the
Fearing Forest. I made my own compass, and with research I found out we are
supposed to go east which is to the left.” When the three girls turned,
sure enough, they saw the black pine tips show in the sun. The girls felt
more depressed, realizing that the Fearing Forest “must be 2,592 feet by
the look of it. Oops! My mistake. I meant, with Annabelle in it, it must be
2,593 feet” was what Felicia said with Annabelle glaring at her, wearing a
disgusted look on her face which clearly said, “Oh just be quiet.” Alice
broke in and questioned, “What are we waiting for? Lets get going!” The
two other girls glared at each other a little bit longer. After a few
seconds of giving Annabelle a dirty look, Felicia announced, “I brought
food that will last for a few weeks. Lets eat up so we can have energy when
we go. Especially you, Alice. You look tired.” Annabelle and Alice shrugged
and sat down to eat. Felicia waited until they were finished and ate her
share. After they were done, Felicia said, “Full? Well then, lets get going
!”
Chapter 6
The girls were feeling more of a bond than when they first started out on
the journey. Besides the conflict between Annabelle and Felicia, everybody
was getting along fine. They were almost to the Fearing Forest when Felicia
whispered, “I’m starved!” The other girls looked at each other in alarm.
Alice had come up with it, saying that they needed a secret code to
emphasize the word “danger.” Then Alice chose the phrase “I’m starved,”
so enemies wouldn’t know that they had noticed them. Felicia’s eyes were
determined, but scared. Secretly, Annabelle took out her jar of infinite
fire “in-cases,” while Alice took her pocket knife out of her belt.
Felicia quickly whipped out her candelabra, and carefully struck the match.
The three girls tiptoed behind the nearest tree. Nobody saw anything. A few
minutes passed, and then the girls saw the danger. Each girl rubbed their
eyes, and looked again. They just saw the same thing over and over again.
Somebody was using the Forbidden Magic.
Felicia gaped at the creature stationed in front of her. Beside her,
Annabelle and Alice did the same. All three girls thought the same thought:
At least he didn’t notice us. Felicia decided to put her talents in gear.
Using her ventriloquist voice, she hooted a barn owl’s hoot. Annabelle’s
first thought was, Where did Felicia learn how to hoot? Both Alice and
Annabelle stared at Felicia in wonder, but Felicia quickly shrugged and
lifted her candelabra, which had a spark of flame. The other two girls
instantly knew what it meant: USE FIRE. Annabelle took out a fire “in-case
” from the jar without letting anybody know. Alice took out her transparent
knife and reflected it from the sun. A small branch that she held
underneath her caught on fire. The three girls nodded at each other, and
Alice indicated that Felicia was supposed to use her weapon first. Felicia
rolled up a piece of paper, and lit it on fire. Then, with lightning speed,
she hurled the ball right onto the face of the creature. BOOM! A sizzling
sound as loud as thunder was heard throughout the whole forest. The ball
didn’t work; the magic was much too strong. Alice had thrown a trail of
small, flammable objects around the hard-to-explain creature and lit one
which caused the others to flame too, so the creature was trapped.
The actions Alice and Felicia did, were affective but couldn’t destroy the
monster completely. Annabelle decided her fire “in-case” would be the only
hope to save all of them. She grabbed her “in- case” slingshot and aimed
towards the creature. It hit him directly on the face like Felicia did, but
now since he was weakened by the flames and the fire “in-case” was super
effective, the monstrous creature disintegrated right on the spot. All three
girls exchanged glances, realizing for the first time that they could work
together as a team, a great team that understood each other. Felicia started
, “Us together, we’re like, we’re like…” Alice quickly added in, “It’
s like Felicia’s the fire; a great starter with fast ideas, I’m water; I
flow with the current that’s taking me, I don’t fight back, and Annabelle
is like wind; a great backup, breezy, unpredictable, in a good way, and…
Wait, how did you get those flying balls that leave sparkles behind their
path, Annabelle?” Annabelle described it, “My mom gave them to me. She
basically knew magic. There were only three kinds, fire like Felicia, water
like Alice, and wind like me.” All three girls stared into each other,
feeling a connection they never, ever felt before.

Felicia led the way along a trail that was clearly made a long time ago. She
nimbly stepped over suspicious leaves and rocks. She looked behind her, and
was relieved that Alice and Annabelle were copying her movements. Then,
there was a big, big hole. Felicia backed up and took a running start. Thump
! She landed gracefully on her feet. Just as she was about to continue her
expedition, she heard a yell from Annabelle. With a thumping heart, Felicia
dared herself to turn around. Finally, she decided on a compromise and spun
on her heel to face Alice, who’s face was stricken with fear. Annabelle was
stuck inside the trap that Felicia had so much trouble getting over before
. Oh, no. Not Annabelle. Now everything’s going to be difficult. Felicia
took out her rope and swung it at Annabelle. Everything’s going to be fine.
I hope.
After Annabelle got out of the big ditch, Annabelle just found out that she
was in LOTS and LOTS of pain. She had just sprained her ankle, but was
trying not to notice. Felicia was too observant. “Okay, who has a first-aid
kit? We better hurry,’cause the bell’s dinging up there. The people are
going to come looking for us.” Alice took out a first-aid kit, but
hesitantly. Annabelle rolled her eyes. “Don’t bother with me. I’ll be
fine.” Secretly, she thought, But it HURTS so much! She was glad (for once
!) that Alice said, “I don’t know how to use a first-aid kit, though. I
just bought this in case.” Now, they can’t fix me up anymore, so they don
’t have to bother! Her delightfulness was gone when Felicia decided to
ignore her and picked up the kit. “I know first-aid,” she explained.
Annabelle rolled her eyes again but put up with it. Alice found a huge tree
with a hollow trunk, and moved Annabelle into it. Felicia applied bandages
and ointments, until Annabelle’s foot was wrapped up tightly. Sighing with
relief, Annabelle tried to stand up, only to fall down again.
Alice was known as “the cartographer.” She could make maps of any kind as
long as she knew every inch of her map. According to one of her maps, the
three girls still had to go twenty-five miles. Alice sighed. She glanced at
how Annabelle was trying to get comfortable in the small space of the tree
trunk. We need WAY more space, since it’s getting dark. Finally, Alice
decided to search for a cave by herself. She snuck away while Felicia was
busy arguing with Annabelle about how much space she was taking up. Before
Alice had even gone two steps, a gruff clamped over her shoulder. Alice
opened her mouth to scream, but whoever captured her had quick reflexes. He
or she quickly tied a thick rope around Alice’s mouth, wrapped some sort of
cloth around her entire body, and set off with her struggling under his
grip. As Alice took everything all in, she decided to just stay cool about
it and just memorize how she got there. She passed some empty caves, HUGE
rocks that were almost as tall as the sky, and a little red brick house.
This was the house that she was shoved into. Her capturer closed to door
behind her and locked the door, leaving Alice to ponder who her capturer was.
Chapter 8
Felicia and Annabelle finally stopped arguing to wonder where Alice had gone. They were so caught up in their conflict that they didn’t notice the man kidnap Alice. But they knew that she was kidnapped from Felicia’s instincts and from Annabelle’s logic of fairy tales, it was Don Gorde, known as the “Kidnapper For No Reason.” It was also rumored that he had been using the Forbidden Magic. But now, the girls knew that it was true. Annabelle glared at Felicia. “This is all your fault! If you didn’t start our arguing, then we would have saved Alice. But then, you HAD to start jabbering, and now here we are, clue-less of where she is. Just then, Felicia’s cell phone beeped. She quickly checked, and announced, “Oh, Annabelle, you spoke to soon!” Felicia showed Annabelle the message that Alice had sent them on her cell phone. “Now we know where she is, Annabelle. The problem is, how are we going to defeat Don Gorde? His magic is way too powerful for your ‘in-cases.’” Two very wary girls huddled together, shivering in the chilly night.
After Alice had quickly freed herself from the ropes, she quickly typed a message to Felicia on her cell phone. She was glad there was still connection in the forest or there would probably be no chance of saving her in any way. She knew that Don Gorde would leave her alone for at least two hours because she heard him muttering, “One hour… no, no, no,…Maybe it’ll be best to give her a little more time...To decide …if my queen…Two hours, yes, yes maybe a little more…Me all powerful King at last! Hope…hope…Maybe she will be queen to the all powerful sorcerer Don Gorde!” Alice texted Felicia again, this time writing: Hey, if you guys could come quickly and then hide in one of the sacks of flour and when he goes away again, take me with you. He wants me to be his queen. Time well! It takes exactly @# minutes to get here, and @$ back. Hope you can decode it. I’m just being cautious. Remember: Don Gorde is like erif, uoy nac yortsed mih htiw retaw. Also, we have about @% selim to go. Hope, Alice. She quickly hid her cell phone in her pocket thinking, I hope they can decode it. I hope they can come. Felicia knows a lot about technology and I hope that Annabelle has a decoder to move the job along more quickly. She has a lot of magic stuff. Then she smiled. She had just enough time to invent something. | | | b******r
