Reminder: This Wednesday, January 30th from 7-9 pm at the Carver auditorium
(850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville), the MCCPTA Curriculum Committee will
host a Math Curriculum Information Night covering all the changes to the
entire curriculum, K-12. This includes C2.0 Algebra, which will be rolled
out next fall to all students who'll be taking Algebra next year, i.e.,
middle and high school students. Please see below for a link to the flyer.
MCPS curriculum experts will be there to explain the new math curriculum,
give examples and illustrations of how instruction is/will be different, and
most importantly, take your questions and hear your concerns. I strongly
urge everyone who has either questions or concerns to attend, to hear what
MCPS has to say and also to demonstrate the widespread questions and
concerns I've been hearing from so many of you over the past two years.
Some people at the top think the concerns are limited to just a few schools;
if you think otherwise, please come.
A word to the wise: I've been deputized to moderate the Q&A session, and I'
ll be trying to keep us on track by asking questioners to ask specific
questions about the curriculum and its implementation. (In other words, no
rants.) I encourage everyone to think ahead of time about the questions
they'd like to ask and be as specific as possible about concerns/complaints.
One question I continue to have is: when are we (parents) going to get to
actually see the curriculum rather than hear about the theory/philosophy
behind it?
Other suggestions:
Instead of "my child doesn't get any acceleration," ask for a description of
what the acceleration is supposed to be.
Instead of "my child is bored," explain that your child had to spend X weeks
on topic Y but the material that came home in week X wasn't any deeper or
more challenging than the material in week 1.
And so forth. I look forward to hearing what you have to say to MCPS and as
always, the more people there to show how much this matters to us, the
better.
