US Embassy in China uses a prepaid phone card system for scheduling
interviews. It usually costs an applicant several phone cards and multiple
calls to make one appointment. The system places undue burden on applicants
because it is costly, inefficient, and prone to errors. However, many other
US Embassies use a free online appointment system, which is efficient,
accurate, and cost-effective. It allows only one appointment per passport
number to prevent people from selling slots. An online system will reduce
costs for the embassy, eliminate undue burden on applicants, and reduce
errors. There is no reason why an online system cannot be implemented in
China as in other countries. We petition the US Embassy in China to replace
the current visa appointment system with a free online system. | r****u

US Embassy and Consulates in mainland China employ a third-party call center
to schedule visa interviews, which incurs a fee on visa applicants that
doesn’t benefit U.S. governments. It also nourishes corruption because
scalpers pre-occupy time slots from the call center and peddle these slots
to real visa applicants for a profit.
In comparison, visa applicants in Hong Kong and many other countries can
conveniently schedule their visa interviews on line for free, and see which
time slots on which days are available.
Mainland China has the most internet users and internet has penetrated into
every aspect of life in mainland China. We urge U.S. Embassy and Consulates
in mainland China to use a free online system for visa-scheduling purposes,
as their colleagues do in other countries. | c*******n
