DETROIT—Ford Motor Co., F +1.08% which turned in one of its most profitable
years ever in North America in 2012, said it plans to hire 2,200 salaried
workers in 2013, primarily in product development, manufacturing and
information technology.
The planned increase in white-collar workers is the largest in more than a
decade, the Dearborn, Mich., auto maker said in a statement. The company
currently has roughly 28,000 salaried employees in North America.
Ford is coming off a strong year in the U.S., and the company doubled its
quarterly dividend to 10 cents a share starting this quarter. Results for
the final quarter won't be out until later this month, but through three
quarters, North America generated $6.47 billion in pretax operating profit.
The auto maker said it added 8,100 factory workers and salaried
professionals in the past year, some of whom had been laid off and were
brought back to work.
Ford's profit in North America helped overcome struggles elsewhere,
particularly in Europe, where the company has launched a restructuring
effort that seeks to shutter three plants while adding new products to the
market. Ford lost $1 billion in Europe on a pretax basis through three
quarters.
"As we expand our product lineup of fuel-efficient vehicles, we need more
people in critical areas—such as in a range of engineering activities,
vehicle production, computer software and other IT functions," said Joe
Hinrichs, Ford president of the Americas, in a statement.
Ford said it will use social media to reach new, technology-savvy workers,
including such sites as Twitter, FacebookFB +1.02% and LinkedIn. The company
said it also will step up its recruiting efforts to reach military veterans. |
