Such undeniable contradictions are innate within Calvinism and have caused d
ivisions among Calvinists, who cannot agree among themselves on the fine poi
nts of TULIP.
Consider the controversy over the fitness for ordination of Gordon H. Clark.
"Cornelius Van Til led the seminary faculty in a Complaint against Clark's
understanding of the Confession of Faith." 2 In essence, Clark was accused o
f "rationalism" for his unwillingness to pretend that salvation was sincerel
y offered by God to those whom God, according to Calvinism, had consigned to
the blindness of total depravity. Clark considered it to be a direct contra
diction that God could seek the salvation of those "He has from eternity det
ermined not to save."
A similar controversy which originated among the faculty at Calvin Seminary
"had plagued the Christian Reformed Church during the 1920's ... [and in 192
4] ended with the exodus of the Calvinists from the Christian Reformed Churc
h under the leadership of Herman Hoeksema, and the formation of a new church
, the Protestant Reformed Church." 3 Van Til, in disagreement with the Westm
inster Confession, argued that Clark was making "logic rule over Scripture .
.. " Van Til insisted that Scripture contains irreconcilable paradoxes which
"have of necessity the appearance of being contradictory." 4
Attempting to escape the irrationality of blaming the non-elect for failing
to do what they can't do, some Calvinists insist that man is able but simply
not willing to turn to Christ. This is a minority view and partially correc
t. The problem with sinners is indeed unwillingness. For a person to be unwi
lling, however, he must have a will and thus by an act of that will could be
come willing. Furthermore, Calvin and his followers have declared in the cle
arest language that man is unable to believe the gospel, to turn to Christ o
r to seek God or good: "He is free to turn to Christ, but not able." 5 Inabi
lity is certainly the major view.
