I was woken up at 2am by a thunderstorm. That's just fucking great. If I
were at home, I would not want to
spend a day out in that weather. But I was in a motel in Gorham, NH, on the
north side of White Mountains.
I had planned to run for an entire day, and the thunderstorm isn't going to
change that.
I got up at 4am, left my keys in the room, grabbed my stuff and shut the
door. It's just me and my
backpack now. My headlamp and GPS were on. I needed my 305 not to keep track
of the pace but to locate
myself. After a few minutes on the road I came to the start of the Pine
Mountain trail. It's a little known
trail, and seemed to be not marked at all. At some point, I must have taken
a wrong turn and ended up on a
ski mobile trail. Obviously, nobody has visited it since the snow melted. I
was practically running in mud
and water. You can tell what I was doing by looking at the mile splits:
mile 1: 10:43
mile 2: 15:42
mile 3: 15:18
mile 4: 12:37
mile 5: 18:52
mile 6: 11:29
mile 7: 12:35
mile 8: 15:41
In fact, after just a couple miles, I was completely lost. It was dark and
it was raining, so the only thing I
could depend on to navigate myself is my GPS. Still, as the trail goes up
and down, winding through the
Mountain valleys, I wasn't even sure that I was heading the right direction.
It was incredibly frustrating.
Only after 6,7 miles, I saw a dirt road which led to a camping ground. It
was good to see some sight of
human activity. After 8 miles I managed to find the trail head of an ascent
to Mt Madison. That's where the
fun begins.
Mile 9 (18:25) and Mile 10 (26:25) were steep uphills on very rocky trails
with a lot of tree roots and water
running down from the storm. I was basically hiking IN a small waterfall,
trying to run whenever I can.
There was a sign saying "This trail is only for those in top physical shape"
. Another sign says "Stop. This
place has the worst weather in America. Turn back if the weather is bad."
The rain pretty much stop by
then, so the weather wasn't so bad after all. The next 3 miles were probably
the most strenuous hiking I
have done. The splits were 58:37, 54:40, 54:05. Yep, those were mile splits,
not 10K splits.:) Ok New
Yorkers, if you thought Bear Mountain was hard, just wait till you see this
one. The Presidential Range of
Appalachian trail, as rocky as a trail can possibly get. The summit to Mt
Madison was about 4.5 miles on the
trail, and maybe 4000+ ft elevation gain. That's only the beginning of the
fun. I next headed to Mt Madison
hut - a lone house in the mountains, and then reached the summit of Mt Adams
, the second highest peak
in white mountains. It was foggy and windy. Sometimes I could not see the
mountains around me, only the
piles of rocks that mark the Appalachian trail. I passed Mt Jefferson and
headed to Mt Washington. It never
gets any easier. At some point I needed to cross a patch of the trail
covered with snow. I had to kick my feet
into the snow, and claw my hands into the snow, just so that I won't fall
off. There were also sections where
climbing skills came handy. Anything harder than that would turn into
technical climbing. I did manage a
couple sub-30 minute miles and man I was moving!
Thanks to the rain, in fact, I didn't need much water and only need to fill
my water bottle once (with water
melted from the snow) on the summit to Mt Washington. I had water treatment
drops, which took 5 minutes
to mix, and then another 15 minutes in the bottle before it's drinkable. By
the time I reached the top of Mt
Washington, it had taken me over 8 hours and I covered only 18 miles. The 10
miles in the presidential
range was the hardest 10 miles I ever traveled.
While I had spent 8 hours in wilderness, hanging on for my life, all of a
sudden I met human civilization
again at the top of Mt Washington. There is an auto road as well as a rail
road that leads up to the summit.
They even have a restaurant up there. I enjoyed three hot dogs and refilled
my waterbottles with fresh and
clean water. It was already 1pm, and I had moved far slower than I expected.
I wanted to go to North
Conway, a nice little town I passed by on the bus to Gorham. But I was
unsure if I could handle any more of
the rocks on tired legs, and I needed to make it before dark. So I decided
to go on the road from now. I
turned off my GPS at this point, saving the battery for navigation in case
of emergency only.
The descent on Mt Washington auto road was 7.6 miles long and one mile down
vertically. The view was
spectacular. Normally, going down at -12% on the road isn't the idea of a
fun run. It's basically brutalizing
the legs. But this is exactly the rare downhill training opportunity I
needed. 7.6 miles doesn't sound far, but
on the mountains, it separates two worlds apart. It was windy and freezing
at the top, and steamy 85F at
the bottom. I shuffled very slowly, around 10 minute pace maybe, on the way
down. For the first 4,5 miles,
it was okay, and then it became uncomfortable. Along the way I saw several
cars that broke down. There
were signs every half mile or so telling cars to stop and cool down their
brakes. I also took occasional
walking breaks to cool down my own brakes.
Then, I needed to go 20 miles along the highway to North Conway. I was
shuffling slowly. After 12 hours it
became difficult, as my left anterior shin started to hurt a lot. A muscle
above my left knee was also a bit
inflamed. At some point I dip in a brook next to the highway to cool down my
legs. It felt wonderful. But
still, I realized that I cannot push reckless like in a race. I was entirely
on my own and I needed to make
sure that my pain won't blow up like it did in the 24 hour race last year. I
started taking walking breaks. In
fact, at some point I thought I wouldn't be able to run for the rest of the
day. But then, the pain got a little
better, and I was able to run again. When I reached small towns, I stopped
by convenient stores to get
drinks. I felt reasonably good in the last stretch, was able to run for the
last 4,5 miles just fine. At around
8pm, just about when the sun had done down, I reached North Conway.
I covered 45 miles in total, and it was my most strenuous ultra yet. I was
out on the trail and on the road
for a total of 15.5 hours. Other than that some muscles on my left leg were
brutalized, I felt reasonably
energetic. I ate 5 clif bars, 2 clif shots, 3 hot hogs along the way, and
didn't even touch any of my GU gels.
The Nuun tablets were wonderful. Next time, I gotta plan better and
hopefully spend the entire day on
runnable trails.:)

I suggested it to serendip before but it's a bit far for New Yorkers. I
would love some companies. At some point, looking up at the rocky mountains
above me, I thought, while I don't know how I would be getting back once I
get up there, at least I'm glad that my family wasn't with me coz I would
never want to subject them to this kind of risk.
