Arrived at Beijing Friday night. Took a 3 mi run around 工体
on Saturday morning. Thanks to ekiden's brother who brought
the bib to my hotel. Called friends and fatboyhog to plan for
the race day. A college friend of mine from Beijing would run
his first half marathon. I was so excited for him. The rest of
the day was pretty much relax and eat. I bought a Race-Ready short
for this race to get rid of fuel belt.
Race day morning was still hazy and foggy, but temp was perfect
for a race. A friend of mine and I took subway to 前门. Getting to
the start line turned out to be a challenge. Security check point
was chaotic and jam-packed with people. fatboyhog already arrived
at the start, but we were still stuck at the security check point.
When I finally got to the full marathon corral, the start line
was packed like sardines with runners. I couldn't reach the front
line to meet fatboyhog, but I felt warm with close body contact with
other runners. I met runners, one from 河南 who was over 60, and the
other was from 山东. Both were enthusiastic marathon runners. All
runners surround me were excited waiting for the gun to go off.
Rain started before the gun went off.
Mile 1-2: my shoes were soaked even trying to dodge accumulated water on
road surface. I had a question mark on my mind since I've never run
in soaked shoes before.
Mile 3: tried to avoid heavy rain by running under the overpass.
Mile 4: whole body was soaked, and realized my salt tablets would be soaked
in water soon. Not quiet sure whether my 305 would survive the rain.
Mile 4-6: fast pace fueled by the cheering crowds. I realized I need to
control my pace.
Mile 7: took a pit-stop on the side of the streets. was gonna take it on 新
华门墙, but heavy security guards deterred me.
Mile 10: met a college friend of mine who's waiting to take a shot of me. We
wanted to take a picture together, but the security guards wouldn't allow
us. What the heck!
Mile 13: salt tablets were almost dissolved by rain water. I just put my
finger into the pocket to get remaining salt, and sucked my finger.
Fortunately, I brought enough gu gels.
Mile 15-16: passing by 学院路 and 北航. I was so excited hoping to spot
another college friends in the crowds because he said he would cheer for me
on the streets. What a memory!
Mile 18: strong gusty wind and a little uphill slowed me down.
Mile 21: heading into Olympic park, and met a group from 北航 running club.
I told them I was an alumni, and they offered me a banana.:)
Mile 22-23: met a dailymile.com friend from Shenzhen inside Olympic Forrest
Park. He finished 2 min earlier than me.
Mile 24-25: straight down the center avenue of the Olympic park passing by
bird nest. Felt so excited and my legs could still keep up which surprised
me. I knew I could finish under 3:45.
Mile 26.2: finished at the national stadium which was nice, but why they
barred all the spectators from stadium? Don't understand! Later on, my
friend who came to pick me up told me that you need a special ticket to get
into the stadium. What the heck!

A little afterthought:
1. Salt tablets need to be sealed from rain water
2. Jet-lag could be overcome by proper eating, hydration and resting
3. Impressed by aid-station volunteers and so many security guards standing
straight and tall 100-meter apart along both sides of the race course.
4. mitbbs.com was not accessible from inside China. Let me know if you have
a trick to get around it.

i'm lucky my shoes were soaked in 2nd half
i hv same question why they barred all the spectators from stadium? the

was so thick and hazy before the rain. After the rain storm,
the air kind of cleared out.

became windy, so my shirt and short were almost dry in the end.
My pace usually slows down during the second half, but this
time it was not that bad.
