Do you know anyone who examines situational demands that may activate these
two
systems separately?

r******s 发帖数: 2155 | 6 Individual's psychological state may be shaped by situations too.
Consider framing effect.
In this case, say if I stress the importance of the task and how a failure
would damage your image, career, etc, would that activate BIS even for
those high on BAS? To activate BAS, one may manipulate the desirableness
of the objective. Successful motivational speakers like Chairman Mao was
good at this.
What do you think?

Reciprocal relationship between person and situations? Snyder and Ickes
(1985) had some interesting discussions on this. Ref: Snyder, M. & Ickes, W.
(1985). Personality and social behavior. In G. Lindzey & E. Aronson (Eds.),
Handbook of social psychology (Vol. 2, 3rd ed.). Reading, MA: Addison-Wesley.
I am not quite sure how this is related to situational demands. Yes BIS/BAS
can be manipulated, along with a number of other personality-like measures.
I probably misunderstood your point..

r******s 发帖数: 2155 | 8 After reading more of the article, it seems I confused some of the constructs.
The original constructs defined BIS/BAS in strict personality/physiological
terms.
People who are different regarding these two dimensions respond differently to
situational demands.
So let me reframe my question, BIS and BAS may or may not be activated at the
same time.
So what kind of factors are responsible for each of them?
Say football players who are going to play in Superbowl. Each player has
different levels

a*e 发帖数: 431 | 9 If you are asking questions such as: what a situation is, why is this
situation similar with or different from the other one, what are the basic
dimensions of situations, what are the most important factors in a situation
for personality psychologists to study...?
I sorry to tell you, no one knows the answer.
We do not have systematic conceptualizations of situations, not to mention
adequate assessment tools. Not a lot of research has been done, and we have
no consensus as of yet.

means a wide open field to play with.
I study negotiations. Huge variations are found in negotiators' perception
of negotiation situations. Individual difference variables such as personality
or intelligence have been found little impact on negotiation outcomes. The
understanding of contextual factors is limited too. I'm attacking the trust
dynamics in this process.
