Posting Title: Research Scientist/Research Associate/Bacterial Geneticist
Brief Introduction of Gate Fuels Inc.: “Imagination, Innovation,
Implementation --- Enabled Technologies for a Green Clean World”
Gate Fuels Inc. is a research start-up firm based in Blacksburg, VA, with
the goal of developing microbial and cell-free platform technologies that
enable low-cost production of biochemicals and biofuels. The first platform
is based on industrially-safe Bacillus subtilis. This microbe has the
capacity to convert cellulosic biomass directly to value-added biofuels and
biochemicals in a single step, called consolidated bioprocessing (CBP). The
second platform is the synthetic enzymatic pathway biotransformation (SyPaB)
, a cell-free system that converts carbohydrates to hydrogen or electricity
directly, with 100% efficiency. The co-founders of Gate Fuels Inc. have
worked on Bacillus subtilis and CBP for more than 25 years (combined
experience); Gate Fuels is a pioneer in the development of cell-free systems
for industrial biocommodity production.
Position Description:
Gate Fuels Inc. is seeking a talented, motivated, and creative scientist to
join the microbial consolidated bioprocessing team. Gate Fuels Inc. is
currently funded by NSF to develop a new ultra-low-cost platform for the
production of renewable biochemicals directly from pretreated
lignocellulosic biomass in a single step by using a novel recombinant
cellulolytic Bacillus subtilis strain. In addition to our NSF funding, we
recently reached a preliminary agreement with an industrial partner, which
will provide additional funding for the project. Lignocellulosic biomass is
the most abundant natural renewable resource, which has great potential in
the production of valuable biocommodities for both short- and long-term
sustainability. However, the process for converting non-food lignocellulosic
material into biocehmicals is not feasible yet due to the high cost of
cellulase involved in cellulose hydrolysis and also to the use of costly
laboratory culture media. Through the use of systematic genetic engineering,
metabolic engineering and synthetic biology approaches, this project will
convert non-cellulose-utilizing B. subtilis to an efficient lignocellulose
utilizer and to produce desired biochemicals with high yields and titers.
As a scientist within the R&D team, you will apply your research and
development skills on cellulase engineering, genetic engineering and
metabolic engineering of Bacillus subtilis strains, and the characterization
of newly engineered strains. The individual will join a group of
interactive scientists and should have strong communication skills. Salary,
fringe benefits, and stock option will be commensurate with experience and
qualifications.
Specific responsibilities:
Perform and complete the tasks assigned by the group leader and generate a
final report;
The isolation, screening and characterization of new bacterial strains from
environment;
Design and construct hybrid DNA constructs in E. coli or Bacillus subtilis;
Cloning, expression and characterization of recombinant cellulases in
Bacillus subtilis and E. coli;
Improve the performance (expression, secretion and specific activity) of
cellulases and cellulosomes by directed evolution and rational design.
Perform gene knockin and knockout in Bacillus subtilis and the new strain
characterization;
Conduct trouble shooting and implement technology solutions.
Communicate research progress and objectives clearly, frequently, and
effectively.
Minimum Requirements:
M.S./Ph.D. or equivalent in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry,
biomolecular engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of laboratory
experience in the related areas.
Proficient in PCR technology, DNA sequence analysis, primer and gene design,
engineering and analysis.
Be familiar with bacterial transformation technologies and homologous
recombination.
Be familiar with DNA cloning, protein expression and purification
technologies.
Strong work ethic and enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented
environment.
Ability to follow instructions and company policies and compliance with
safety procedures.
Demonstrated track record of problem solving and innovation.
Excellent organization and time management skills.
Experience with HPLC and GC analysis is preferred.
Past experience with Bacillus subtilis is preferred.
Past experience with cellulase is preferred.
