Posting Title: Research Scientist – Metabolic Engineering & Fermentation
Brief Introduction of Gate Fuels Inc.: “Imagination, Innovation,
Implementation --- Enabled Technologies for a Green, Clean World”
Gate Fuels, Inc. is a biotechnology startup company that is developing
recombinant Bacillus strains capable of converting non-food biomass into
value-added chemical compounds. Our expertise in cellulase engineering,
cellulose hydrolysis, and genetic modification of Bacillus strains positions
us to establish a consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) platform for low-cost
production of chemicals from nonfood biomass. Gate Fuels proprietary strains
of Bacillus pave a path toward economically viable production of desired
chemicals in one step from lignocellulosic biomass.
Position Description:
Gate Fuels, Inc. is seeking a talented, motivated, and creative scientist to
join the microbial consolidated bioprocessing team. Gate Fuels, Inc. was
founded in 2010 and is being funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation
(NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE) to develop a new low-cost platform
for the production of renewable bio-based chemicals directly from
lignocellulosic biomass in a single step. Lignocellulosic biomass is the
most abundant natural renewable resource. However, the process for
converting non-food lignocellulosic material into bio-based chemicals is too
costly mainly due to the high cost of cellulase used and the use of costly
laboratory culture media. Via systematic genetic engineering, metabolic
engineering and synthetic biology, we are converting non-cellulose-utilizing
B. subtilis to an efficient lignocellulose utilizer and produce desired bio
-based chemicals with high yield, titer and productivity.
As a scientist within the R&D team, you will apply your research and
development skills pertaining to metabolic engineering, genetic engineering
and fermentation to develop industrially-ready Bacillus strains. The
individual will join a group of interactive scientists and engineers and
should have strong communication skills. Salary, fringe benefits, and stock
option will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Specific responsibilities:
Design and construct biological pathways and constituent enzymes for the
production of target molecules;
Perform technical and techno-economic models of pathway operation within the
context of proprietary production processes;
Design and perform experiments for pathway testing and optimization, as well
as strain modification and optimization;
Perform the small and large scale fermentations of the engineered B.
subtilis strains;
Perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA mutagenesis, DNA
subcloning, cell transformation, cell culture, and other more advanced
methods in support of research projects;
Work collaboratively with other team members to accomplish project goals and
milestones;
Use creative problem-solving skills to independently troubleshoot
experimental challenges;
Communicate research progress and objectives clearly, frequently, and
effectively.
Minimum Requirements:
M.S./Ph.D. or equivalent in metabolic engineering, microbiology, molecular
biology, biochemistry, fermentation or a related field and 2+ years of
laboratory experience in the related areas;
Strong background in molecular biology, microbial physiology, and
biochemical pathway engineering with pathway modeling experience;
Experience with recombinant DNA technologies, cell transformation, cell
culture, and pathway optimization;
Experience with small or large scale fermentation;
Strong motivation to learn new technologies and to implement new ideas;
Be able to initiate projects independently with minimum supervision;
Strong work ethic and enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented
environment;
Ability to follow instructions and company policies and compliance with
safety procedures;
Demonstrated track record of problem solving and innovation;
Productivity demonstrated by a track record of publications and /or patents;
Excellent organization and time management skills;
Experience with HPLC and GC analysis is preferred;
Past experience with Bacillus strains is preferred;
Be legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship (OPT acceptable).
Application deadline: January 15, 2014.
To Apply: Please send your application (cover letter, resume and your
expected salary) to c*****[email protected].
