One of the reasons that I failed the residency was the lack of skills of
acquiring knowledge. If I started from the scratch, I would do things
differently.
1.I read a lot but it is not the best way to learn.
A.The best way to learn is to talk to smart people and sit next to smart
people who analytically walk you through the cases, topics and problems.
However, you have to read and understand the basics and intermediate level
material before you start the discussion.
It is more challenging to figure out who is smart and willing to share the
knowledge. Be brave, be proactive and ask many GOOD questions. Convince
people that you want to learn their secret weapons and you are smart enough
to master and inherit their skills. Again, the most important thing in
learning is to find a smart people who can guide you. Talking to a wise man
for 10 minutes is better than reading on your own for years.
B.Don’t read on your own. Ask people what they want to you read, which
chapter in which book, which reviews in which journals…et al. Buy Papers
for PC/Mac and start your own references database from the very beginning of
your training.
C.Understand the guideline and protocol. Read them and discuss with your
smart people who often give you more insights than any books and articles.
Don’t trust protocols and guidelines that often are “made up” and for the
sake of the guideline. Understand their flaws and absurdity. Talk to people
who know the problems inside out.
D.Sign up for journal email alert for your specialty. Follow the news and
updates with your smartphone.
2.It is also a misperception that we learn from patients. You learn a lot
basics from seeing patients in hospital and clinic but the majority of work
in residency is H/P and D/C as well as seeing patients whom the attendings
don’t want to see in their own clinic. Always looking for interesting
patients, asking your attendings and colleagues for interesting patients, be
hungry for and sensitive to interesting cases. KEEP A LOG for all
interesting, challenging, difficult cases.
3.When do you know that your knowledge is good enough? Next time, if you
are asked a question, you know how to formulate the answer in two opposite
directions and you can give the references. By the end, you still have the
confidence to draw your own conclusion. | r******y 发帖数: 146 | | D******3 发帖数: 34 | 3 Thanhs for sharing the great points and good writing. | r*****1 发帖数: 805 | 4 Very illustrating suggestions for beginners. Thank you for sharing! |
