It is a big game between the so called deadline 2015 and USMLE scores. Which
is more important? Of course, it is step score.
Some people are smarter and can do a wonderful job in a short time (less
than 1 year). But for the majority, it still takes a longer time to get a
decent score (maybe 1 year or longer). It is suicidal to take steps in a
rush. It will ruin you big time just to beat the deadline. With bad scores,
no one wants to help you at all because you are not competitive initially.
Inside connections are heavily built upon your score unless you have
something else remarkable.
If you still score less than 220 today, the chance of match is pretty low if
not at all. CS attempts will also kill you. One failure will be a deal
breaker to a large number of programs. If you failed twice, the chance of
match is dismal.
Do not let 2015 frighten you. It is your package which finally gets you
across.

Yes, it is a balancing act to meet the 'deadline' and getting the highest
scores as possible. Issues are the diminishing returns on the time
investment and the reliability of the mock test results. If you want to go
this route, do it full time with full family support.

Look at the list of people just matched, only very few has high score. Maybe
this is small sample bias, but from these successful cases, we can learn
that score is not the necessary. And even with bad scores under 220, other
factors still can compensate.
That list did not specify which program they matched, maybe higher score
with same conditions can match to better programs.

How many people are unmatched? Have you taken a look at their credentials?
They did not report in Medi at all. I am pretty sure that the mean and SD
in matched group are higher than those of the unmatched. Of course, score
is not everything. Someone with score<200 can match with a stroke of luck.
But the vast majority with average scores (<210-220) will end up with
nothing. Of course, it is simply not fair to look at proportions of the
unmatched IMGs only (60% at this time). The unmatched should be stratified
with their respective score range.

53 matched this year vs 68 matched last year. It is a 20% drop that
correlates with the first wave of AMG out of the increased enrollment. If we
take it into account that more people follow medi every year, it is even a
bigger drop. The door is closing. Wolf is coming is time around. It is
time to act.
It would be very unfair and will ask for lawsuits if they shut the door
abruptly. They have given us fair warnings with many 'little' things. They
have increased the number of AMGs, terminated prematch, changed soap,
increase the difficulties of CS, tried to block H-1 or J-1. It is writing on
the wall.

I am totally with you. People with low scores, in general, wont be given a
chance. They are screened out by software since there are 1000 applicants
chasing 10 spots.
Scores are top 1 criteria for a good reason. It is a measure of your
medical knowledge, your learning ability and your work ethics. It is the
best reflection of how good, dedicated a person to this medicine as a career
.
It is a balancing act. Study as if someone has a guy on your back. Have a
sense of urgency. It is now or never.

Well, the difference might be caused by an unwillingness to report. Some
will report after Friday.
68 is a conservative number for last year. A number of prematchers did not
report again when March came. The total number of reported prematchers+
matchers could be well beyond 80.

I agree with you. The door will be shut bit by bit. Maybe after 2018, some
Chinese medical schools will be disqualified from ECFMG lists. But the door
will not be shut completely. That is not good for America in terms of
diversity. 25% would be a bottom number I guess.

53 from 80. It is 30% drop. It is happening!
No time to play it safe. Full time study and full time externship is the
way to go. If you take your time part timing your steps, you might as well
forget it.

Eventually, it will go down to 10% which will discourage many and will
bounce back to 20% range. Just my gut feelings. Unless you have very high
scores and gc, you might not have a chance in 3-4 years.

It is so called tail end syndrome. A few months before CS test format change
, you could not even get a spot. Dont you see most people are studying at
this moment instead of watering here?
