The 2012 match data has been published.
The report states “Of the 11,134 IMGs who participated in the 2012 Match, 4
,886 (43.9%) matched. In the 2011 Match, 4,626 (44.2%) IMGs were matched to
first-year positions.”
Remember that for the above percentages from the NRMP to be counted you have
to interview for residency. Lots of people don’t get interviews. So how
many applicants to ERAS were there in total?
Well lets look at some of the numbers from the NRMP.
11,134 IMGs participated in the 2012 Match (these are people who interviewed
who were not offered a prematch).
7,023 IMGs entering PGY-1 (includes 2300 prematch offers to IMGs and 4700
matched IMGs). Remember that the prematch is now a thing of the past for the
vast majority of programs.
What the NRMP information does not comment on is the number of total IMG
applicants to ERAS.
In the NRMP there were 6,249 US citizen IMG (Including US Permanent
Residents, Conditional Residents, and Refugee citizenship status)
In the NRMP there were 10,004 Non US citizen IMG (those with Foreign
citizenship).
Total NRMP IMG match applicants were 16,253.
As far as I can tell, ERAS does not show the number of applications that it
receives from IMGs. From ERAS data for 2012 match there were 21,889 IMG
applicants to Internal Medicine. If I assume that every IMG candidate who
filed an application through ERAS applied to Internal Medicine and 7,023
IMGs will begin residency in 2012 then the success rate is 32%. It is not
likely that every IMG candidate who filed an application through ERAS
applied to Internal Medicine. Surely some ERAS applicants did not apply to
Internal Medicine. So the actual percentage of success is truly less than 30
%.
So the message is that obtaining a residency in the US is very difficult.
Even good scores are not a guarantee. Nothing is for certain. One should not
assume that they will land a residency spot no matter how good they look on
paper. |
