specialty, you must figure out:
(1) What is the most important thing in your life? Career, family, both, or
religion, humanitarian work, etc.
(2) Are you happy with the specialty during or after residency?
(a) Are you kind of person that is fit for the program? If you have a nerdy
personality or less communicative or speak less english, stay away from
communication intensive specialties, in other words, direct pt care
specialties. The worst scenario is to put an introvert guy who speaks broken
English in psychiatry or ICU with 4 beepers. To know yourself is important.
(b) Is the specialty what you want to do in the future? Do you think if you
really enjoy given the fact that you did 15 yrs ortho in china and tried to
switch to psych in US?
(c) How is the working environment? I prefer to stay away from malignant
working environment. I personally know a prel surgery intern who told me
that there are 6 prel surg interns competing for 1 PGY2 slot. The
competition is intense and everyone anticipates the others to fall first.
(3) Next comes with the workload and pay.
(a) Do not count in yearly salary. Count it in hourly salary.
(b) To know your workload per hour. The lighter, the merrier.
(3) To know your risk level. Neurosurgery is most lucrative but highly risky
. Derm is lucrative but not risky. If you could not manage the risk well, do
not go for it first. |

很多时候选择一项职业不光出于钱的考虑的.还得看感不感兴趣.
光就钱来说,医生教授都是辛苦钱,挣多挣少都没什么可以拿上来说的.没意思. |

也可以照做，你可以到处consult，你一辈子积累的专科知识对医院来说没有用，所以
你老了想比别人多赚就不容易了。长远考虑还是去做专科吧，或者去做pcp，或者趁年
轻休息的7天多去moonlight把钱先赚出来。呵呵一家之言。

a life style is Not free. as a jobless person, she/he can NOT do the
following things:
1. 2 hours swimming per day = it costs 20 dollars per day.
2. 5 months of vacation = hotel room costs $100 per day. airfare is at least $1000 to china.
3. on leave for one year = you need to rent an apartment in other places to live for one year.
If your logic is valid, then everyone is becoming jobless. you have to be hungry to be jobless.
